Windsurfing the South African way

Team Rider Fabio Calo Scores some epic conditions in South Africa

Fabio Calo our Starboard/Severne team rider from Italy spends most of his time on the Water, if you cannot find him on the water he will be searching for wind and waves failing that he will be working frantically in the office to prepare the coming issue of FunBoard Italy.

More recently Fabio just returned from South Africa where on the last day after having no good spot to surf all day he finally followed his instinct and scored an epic session from 4 o clock – 8 pm.

This is how the day started …

After spending Sunday night preparing all the riders for the Funboard photo shoot and making sure the best photographers were available, Monday was setting up to be a really big day and quite a critical one as Monday was their last day in South Africa. Nervously checking the forecast all night on Sunday for constant updates so they could send the team to the best possible location for photo shooting. The forecast was looking good and everything was in place for the final day.

After a confliction in opinions the team riders wanted to chance their luck with a spot that was looking like it would be on fire, however the photographers were not so convinced and they decided to stay put in their current location.

After a scheduled meeting at 1 o clock the team decide to head to a spot called "elands", Fabio decides this would not be the best spot to be shooting and decides to make his own way and acts on instinct. Fabio looses all contact with the photographers and after all the careful preparation is slightly confused why it is not going according to plan. With no contact from the photographers it looked like Fabio would be heading back to Italy empty handed with no photos and very disappointed. He was now faced with the traffic of Cape Town trying to make his way across to Scarborough. Scarborough was getting some huge sets, but the wind was not any good, a local shouts to Fabio to change spots and move to "Head".

Arriving to Head at four o clock, the spot was quite amazing, double mast high sets, wind strong enough for 4.5 really radical conditions and to make it all better the afternoon light was looking good for photos. With only two people in the water they rigged as fast as they could and as luck would have it the they had the staff photographer with them. Fabio headed out with his Evil Twin 74 and Severne Blade 4.5.

"Timining in these sets was crucial, you would get some small mushy sets then an enormous monster would start to build and you were presented with pure pleasure.

I made my turns on enormous walls of water, the feeling was so smooth, I threw my bottom turn down at full speed and then looked up into the eyes of the monster to prepare for my cut back, on my way in I turned and saw the explosion of white foam – truly amazing!"

Nearly 4 hours passed of amazing wave sailing and Fabio Concluded his evening turning up to have dinner with his friends, and sitting very happy with a super 4 hour session that he will never forget and ultimately it gave him the photos they needed for the Funboard shoot.
