Mikey Clancy The Interview

Mikey, where are you at right now?
I am in Pozo at the moment training for the PWA event in Pozo on the 10th of July.

You’ve scored any good sessions yet?
Noo…The wind has been really bad here, well when I mean bad, I mean 4.7 conditions with no waves only chop. Its a pitty because normally at this time of the year the trade winds kick in and its just ballistic 3.7 weather everyday. I just checked the forecast here and it looks like there is gonna be five days of no wind…

How many times have you been to Pozo and how does it differ from your usual sailing spots in Ireland?
This is my third year here in pozo the first time for 3 weeks and last year for two months. Its quite different to the spots I sail back home in Ireland. Normally when its this windy we get bigger waves and I normally try to sail at more cross shore spots but sometimes we get conditions similar to pozo which is real fun for doing massive jumps!!!! The wind in pozo is different though it is usually really consistent and incessant, the first time you sail you wonder will it ever give you a break.

Word is out you scored a wildcard for the PWA contest coming up in Pozo. How does that feel, are you amped?
Yep I got a wildcard. Its amazing! I am so excited to compete in my first event on the PWA world tour. I cannot wait !!!
Hopefully it is the first of many PWA events for me.

What’s your favourite spot and why?
West Coast of Ireland the best place to windsurf in the world. Magheroraty in Donegal is probably my favorite spot on the west, even though I broke my ankle and done my Knee in up there. I suppose its kinda special for me because it was the first beach I went wavesailing at. Oh I forgot to mention to the conditions are absolutely sick there!!

What’s your favorite combo in terms of board, sail and conditions?
My favorite board is the EVO 70. This board is so sweet in every condition but I especially love it when it 3.7 – 4.3 weather and with big waves. I also love the evil twin 74. This is the board I choose from 4.5 to 5.3 conditions and also sometimes use with 4.3. This board is really loose and slashy and just shreds the waves when they are clean, but also is so good in cross onshore conditions.

Checking your website regularly, I get the impression you get to sail alot. How many days on the water do you get each year?
Hmmm i dunno never counted!! Its more than it is on my site anyway cause when I’m tired after sailing I normally forget to update my site. I wish I could have more sessions than I do but sometimes have to miss them cause I have to go to University too!!

Favourite move?
Pushtable Top, Goiter and Taka.

Favourite tunes?
The Bravery, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Cool Kids,Dandy Warhols, Racountours…

Favorite food?
Shepherd’s Pie and Stew…Nothing better to fill you up after a cold day out on the water in Ireland. In Pozo Fernando especial especial Pushloop Table Top Bocadillio es mejor!!!!
