Cabarete’s Premiere Windsurfing Event the Cabarete Classic is set for July 12-15, 2012
Cabarete, Dominican Republic June 12, 2012. – The Cabarete Classic is set to take place from July 12 to July 15, 2012, and is expected to be bigger and more exciting than ever! The Cabarete Classic is the most important windsurfing competition in the Dominican Republic, and one of Cabarete’s largest annual gatherings. For the last event we had around 100 competitors, over half of which come from outside the country. Participating countries include the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, The United States, Canada, England, France, Switzerland, and Australia.
• The Cabarete Classic is a four-day long event, and offers racing and freestyle categories for competitors of all ages and abilities.
• Categories include: mini-juniors, juniors, pro kids, women's class, sport class, open class, (type slalom), long distance, formula class (for kite and windsurfing together), freestyle open, and freestyle juniors (windsurfing).
• The Cabarete Classic incorporates Pablito Guzman’s Water Sports Team, sponsored in part by Vela Windsurf Resorts.
• The event is open to racers of any age, gender, and nationality. There are no qualification prerequisites.
While the Cabarete Classic is primarily a windsurfing competition, event festivities will not end at sundown. Each night, programming will continue with special dinners, concerts, and other gatherings for racers, fans, and their families, as well as members of the press. These events are designed to bring visitors and community members together to enjoy the entertainment and fun the town has to offer.
The Cabarete Classic was first held in 2006 as a means of keeping the spirit of windsurfing alive in Cabarete and to reunite friends from all over the globe to enjoy the winds of Cabarete together. Over the course of 4 successful years, it has played host to competitors from all over the world. Last year the event paid out over $6000 US in prize money as well as other prizes that were awarded.
Pablito Guzman is the force behind the Cabarete Classic, founding the event and bringing it to life. He is a Cabarete native and has competed in contests all over the globe for the past twenty years. He has several national titles to his credit and his windsurfing talents have been showcased in several magazine and newspaper articles. Pablito is dedicated to improving the community through helping disadvantaged children to be able to learn and participate in the great sport of windsurfing.
