AT A GLANCE

The Starboard iSonic has earned a great reputation in the past, having cleaned up in the 2008 PWA slalom season and also had good success in 2009. iSonics are now available in two constructions, wood or woodcarbon. We tested the latter which has a combination of a carbon deck with a wood base, for the best combination of stiffness and control. For 210 the 111 has new rail designs with a harder release edge and altered cut outs in the tail to achieve a more efficient planing area. The iSonic keeps its rounded off 'low-nose', its tail wingers and wide tail shape. The rocker line is fairly flat and appears unchanged. On the deck, the nose area and around the mast track is concaved with the footstrap area raised to give the most favourable riding position. It also comes with good quality Drake footstraps and minimal but highly effective footpads. The iSonic's are not supplied with fins but they are tested and developed with Deboichet fins, who offer a discount from their website, when you show them a copy of your receipt.

RIDE & HANDLING

The iSonic 111 offers good stability under foot, thanks to its width and its hull shape which combine effectively to accelerate it quickly up to planing spped. Although well outboard, the footstrps are easy to find and get into. From the footstraps the riding position is superb, the deck shape and dome combined with the straps being right on the rails of the board, puts you in the ideal position to be able to hook your heels over the rail and drive the board hard. You feel very connected to the board and the ride is very exciting. The Starboard gybes easily, whether it's wide fast turns or hard and tight, it deals with anything and despite its width it also remained composed in rougher water.

SUMMING UP

A superb combination of excitement, control and above all performance. Highly recommended.
