After his latest update from Curaçao, Amado Vrieswijk went back to Bonaire where he attended the 2013 ProKids Bonaire. In its 9th edition, the event was blessed with good conditions and both slalom and freestyle competitions were completed over the weekend. Amado won the freestyle in the U-17 division after being beaten by Kiri Thode in the Men's. Read it in his own words below:
The fun started on Friday May 31st with registration. WindGuru announced a windy forecast and we were all quite excited. So perfect! After everyone registered, the event was officially opened and we started a sick freestyle night session. This was big fun! The beach was packed with spectators, lights and a huge projector, cameras and press everywhere. The gusty winds made it a little tricky, especially with limited visibility but I managed to finish in 4th place. Taty Frans took 1st, Kiri 2nd and Björn Zaragoza got 3rd.
Saturday June 1st, 9 AM sharp: Skippers' meeting for the slalom competition. In the morning, the wind was really strong and I was a little overpowered on with my Severne Reflex III 7.0 and my Starboard iSonic 97 Carbon. But the wind dropped a little around noon and I really enjoyed racing again after a long time focusing mainly on freestyle.
The afternoon was dedicated to... freestyle time! After a short skippers' meeting, the single elimination was on and the heats started. In the U-17 division, I ended with 1st place, with Jurgen Zaragoza taking 3rd and got kicked out by Kiri Thode in the Men’s division. Kiri went on to win the Men's ahead of Choco Frans and Björn Zaragoza.
On Sunday, the wind was strong again and everybody was excited to see some more action. We did another round of slalom and Taty Frans got 1st place with Kiri Thode landing in 3rd. In the afternoon, the younger kids completed the SUP race with a great atmosphere and a lot of fun.
The awards ceremony was great success and it seemed like the whole island was on Sorobon Beach when the band started for the evening program! I look back on again a really nice event here on Dushi Bonaire. Nine years ago, I participated for the first time in the ProKids event and managed to win every year first place in my age group. This was the last year in the "kids division" for me as I’m turning 18 in January 2014. I’m happy to see that a lot of young kids are starting windsurfing and seem to have as much fun as I had when I was their age... I still do today and everyday!
A big thanks to Mr. Elvis Martinus, his crew, the ladies of the Aquaspeed Windsurfers and everybody who made this event again a huge success!
