On the beach: The Quad IQ is Starboard's allround waveboard, because its diversity in fin setup will let you adapt to a wide range of conditions. Compared to last year's spring, the fin setup is the biggest difference. Putting the big fins in front will let you do your thing in on-shore conditions, while putting the small fins in front creates you your side-shore board. Stick to the twin fins for skate style and extreme tight turns. The board has a V-shape starting from the nose and ending underneath the straps. Clearly accentuated on the front part of the board, it gradually decreases towards the back. And behind the back fins a true mono-concave sets in. The pads feature heel bumpers and the board comes with two glass fibre-reinforced 16cm twinzer fins and two 11- and 14cm fins for the different Quad setups made from G10.
On the water: Testing all the different setups for the Quad in-depth would've probably taken us an additional week, because thanks to the slot box, you can move the fins back and forth as well. We've tried all the setups shortly after each other to determine whether you'll feel a difference, with the fins always dead center in the slot box. What we found is that we preferred the classic Quad setup for all conditions: small fins at the front, big fins at the back. You might want to put the big fins in front if you intend to slash up a lot of small waves, because you will have the tools to make very tight turns. But this will also affect your top-end speed. You will want to use the twinzer setup if you're flatwater blasting and you would like some more performance from your board. With our recommended setup, the board offers all kinds of rewards for different conditions. What truly stands out is its ease of use. Without any period of adjustment you will be able to control the board and even a wave beginner will not be in over his or her head. It planes well, accelerates well and has a reasonable top speed. On the wave it is very variable, will hold a turn steadily and easily transfers from rail to rail. Even inexperienced riders are forgiven for applying too much rear foot pressure.
