Windsurfing and skiing have always been able to go hand and hand. You ski in the winter and windsurf in the summer. When Olympic Downhill Skier Resi Stiegler went to Maui she fell in love with the sport. She has been progressing quickly and is loving windsurfing right now. She also managed to capture the heart of Starboard Dream Team member, Kevin Pritchard. The two of them have been out ripping it up on Maui's North Shore. We caught up with her to see how her progress is going and what she likes about the sport so much.
Starboard: How long have you been windsurfing?
Resi Stiegler: Well I have been off and on windsurfing for the last three years but now I am really starting to love it. I am on the brink of fully planing through my gybes and can't wait to make one. I have been windsurfing the last few days and I'm so close that I can taste it.
Starboard: What is your favorite part of windsurfing?
Resi Stiegler: I love the feel of the wind against my face, it's like flying down the hill at top speed! The rush is incredible.
Starboard: How does windsurfing and skiing relate to each other?
Resi Stiegler: Well they both have the thrill of it never being the same run twice. The snow melts, the wind gusts, sports like these never get boring.
Starboard: Where do you live?
Resi Stiegler: Well I have been living in Maui the last two months but I come from Jackson hole. Now it is time to go do some training then to Mt. Hood for some camps. Then a couple more training and then back on the road before we know it.
Starboard: Wow! So Maui and Jackson hole, sounds pretty nice. What is your favorite
Resi Stiegler: This year the Starboard Kode 86 is what I like to ride the most. I am super happy with the way this board lets me progress.
Starboard: So we hear that you have a pretty good windsurfing instructor?
Resi Stiegler: Well, not really. You would think that if you are dating a world champion he would give you some tips but I just have been going with the trial and error.. Lots of errors.
Starboard: Are you going to start competing in windsurfing competitions?
Resi Stiegler: I am working on it. I think I need another year of practice and then I am ready to take some girls out. I think that the good thing is that I am used to going fast, and I have been competing all my life so that will come naturally.
Starboard: Tell us about your skiing, what discipline do you do and all that stuff.
Resi Stiegler: Well I used to do all the disciplines of Alpine Skiing, Downhill, Super G, GS and Slalom. I had some pretty bad injuries the past three years, so I am just focusing on Slalom for the moment. Last year I had my first year back without an injury and now I am buliding off of that.
Starboard: So I guess your are pretty good?? What are some of your career highlights?
Resi Stiegler: Ha ha, yeah, I love skiing and it has been my life. I haven't got what I have set out to get yet, but I can feel it coming. I have won 6 or 7 National Titles and finished 15th in the Olympics in Italy.
Starboard: We heard that you have quite the skiing family?
Resi Stiegler: Yeah my pop's won a gold medal for Austria, and my brother just made the US Ski Team after graduating from college. My mom's a pretty good skier too, so we have all been skiing all our lives. I am really happy for my brother to join up with me and hopefully we will get to travel together. We will be going to New Zealand together to train for the season and that will be fun.
Starboard: Well thanks for your time and good luck this year Resi.
