BACKGROUND

The Starboard Rio is designed to offer all the light wind performance of a long board with an easy and fast planing shape that is fun and progressive for all levels of rider. It is available in two different constructions, Tuff-skin or the slightly ligher 'Sport'.The Express rig is Tushingham's package rig option, designed to offer greate all-round freeride performance at a budget price.

AT A GLANCE

Starboard has put a lot of throught into the Rio with design innovations such as the heel gutters that create better deck dome under your feet, for improved grip and control while sailing from an inboard position and the Sport model which features a new deck finish called 'Star touch', a smooth non-abrasive coating that is grippy when wet. The board has plenty of footstrap position options to take you from beginner upwards, a retractable daggerboard and a Drake fin.The Express rig coonsists of a quality five batten sail, two-piece mast, an Aeron Rookie boom, mast foot and base. There is the option to upgrade the mast from epoxy to carbon 45 for a small additional cost and this is well worth it.The Express sail is a basic, tuned down version of Tushingham's highly popular freeride models. It is well built and offers a good range of performance for beginner throungh to higher level riders.

RIDE & HANDLING.

The Rio is very stable under foot and the Star touch finish works well to offer grip without requiring harsh non-slip. Off the plane, in light winds, it perform extremely well. With the daggerboard down it tracks along smoothly with excellent directional stability and upwind ablility. It is not the quickest to get planing but accelerates very smoothly and progressively when the wind picks up. Getting back towards the straps is very easy thanks to their inboard positioning and heel gutters give you great control and comfort from this position. The Rio handles any manoeuvres with ease and it can turn smoothly on or off the plane.

OVERALL

A superb quality package at a very competitive price. It delivers a great mix of light wind and planing performance, which is fun for any level of rider. This is an entry level board that you should never want to trade in!
