Hi there,

I bought a 3.4 north voodoo for strong winds & waves and have a Kombat 86....can I still use this sail but with a smaller fin (let's say 7.9 inches)?

Many thanks !
Bertrand.

I am also interested to hear experiences re. K86 + small sails. I haven't used mine with smaller than 5.0 yet, but I intend to go down to about 4.0. I'm 85 kg.

I weigh ~ 80Kg
I use a 4.2 most of the time with my K86 (+ freeride fin) and it rocks! Don't think there will be a problem with a 4.0 (range is stated as 4.0 - 6.0). I ordered a somewhat smaller fin (actually the fin belonging to the new K87) because I still plan to use the K86 with a 3.7 and I'm quite sure (speculation) that it will handle well.

Bertrand,

The smallest sail I've used on my Kombat 86 is a 4.2 for my 65 kg. Sorry, never dared to test it with a 3.6 sail or less because it's usually epic conditions and I'm always on my smallest Acid 62 when it's blowing +35 knots...

I'm really surprised how good control I can have with such a "wide" board in strong & gusty wind (25-35 knots; 1.5-2m swell/waves). For my light weight, the 30 cm freeride fin is way too large with such a small sail and makes the board almost unsailable. With the 24 cm wave fin and outboard and back (4) footstraps setting, the board is too stiff and directional but with inboard and front (3) footstraps setup, it's getting much better, more loose and turny.

As for the smallest fin, I can't comment because I didn't test anything smaller than the stock 24 cm wave fin yet, but I guess that a 23 or even a 22 cm fin would be fine with your 3.4 sail.

Cheers !

I haven't had time to try my Kombat 87 with smaller sails than 5.0 yet, but I've used it with Drake Natural fins from 22 to 25cm. The 22 works fine with the board and should work good with a 4.0 (I've sailed this fin on other boards with a 3.5 without problems - the Drake naturals have an amazing range). Since the Drake Naturals sail small for their depth, I would go smaller (21) if I would use a more traditional wave fin with a 4.0. At 85 kilos, a Natural 23 or other 21.5-22 should workk OK too.
