View Full Version : Futura 122 and sail size 8.2 or 8.7

7th March 2012, 08:37 PM

I hope a couple or more of you will answer my quick question.

I have for long been considered an UltraSonic, but unfortunately the price is far above my level, so I would like to hear about a Futura 122 instead .

Can it work in 12 to 15 knots of wind with a two camber freeride sail in size 8.2 or 8.7 ?
And can you "easily" reach speed of 20 to 25 knots in these conditions and with this combo ?

I weigh 80 kilograms and is a freerider by heart. My level is intermidiate +. Doing jibes, water starts, etc.

Best regards

Hej Claus

I am also from DK, but guess we better keep it in english :-)

I weigh in at 87 kg, and have the 2009 FUTURA 122, which should be 117 l.

Excellent board ! Very fast free-race board, that just flies above choppy waters.

My largest sail is a 8.0 V6 2 camber, and with my technique/weight 12 kts are well below planning, but with your 80 kg + 8.7 sail you will be close to planning.

The smallest sail I use on it, is a 6.2 HELLCAT, but the 6.7 HELLCAT is the sweetspot combination for this sail/board.

If you will be sure to plane, then you might consider the 133 FUTURA, which have had excellent reviews as well.

Yes, we keep it in English.

I am just getting a bit confused when Neil Pryde wind range chart for a 8.2 h2 center is 12 knots ...

So maybe I should ask which size Futura is fitting this size (8.2/H2)?

The Futura 141 would probably be the best choice for your 8.2 H2 in 12 knots. I have the Futura 133 & weigh 75 kg. For me, the 133 feels best with a 7.6 sail. It is fine with an 8.5, but does not plane up nearly as early or feel as good as a larger board with an 8.5 sail in 12 knots. The 133 can feel better than the 141 with your 8.2 but only in higher wind speeds.

interesting discussion; at 95kg i've thought that futura 133 is too big for wind range of my 8m (superfreak with top end bias) and have thought it best as a 9m racy sail board. definitely speedy and early planing..

Are you talking about the 133 in 12 knots of wind? In higher winds I would agree with you but in 12 knots I don't think the 133 would be too big for a sailor of any weight.

agreed coachg, but if it gets big for me at 95kg i think the 121/8.2 might work out better for the o.p.

Hi Claus

If you want a Futura 122, the best sail for this conditions for you should be 8.2, but if you can get a Futura 133, 8.6 will be beter, personally use Turbo 8.6 and perfect combination.

Hope this help

Hi Remy,

I use the Futura 122 from 2011 with 7,7 H2 (75kg, 170 cm) and it works perfectly on lake garda.
I'm going to think about 8,7 H2 or even 9,2 H2 to improve low end. Is this an useful addition?
I'm interested in your opinion.

Best wishes from the wild south of Germany ;-).

I have Wood Carbon Futura 111l,from 2010. With 4 cambers 7.8 race sale I can start planning in 12 knots. Some pumping of course is needed. I tried to put 8.5 freerace sale, but it feeled unbalanced combo.
My weight is 80kg.

Just to add my experience with the futura wood 122, 2010: 7,2 hellcat, 7,7 hellcat, 8,0 V8 are perfect, lots of control, top speed with drake 40 fin. V8 9,0 with select 44 freerace : manageable, but combo feels slightly unbalanced and not very efficient in lulls. To cover low end, I choose the US 147 for sails >9 m2, providing comfort and excitement at the same time.

Hi Remy,

finally what do you think about?

Thanks for your prompt answer.

Hi Andreas

You can use with out problems until 9m over it will start to be not in balance. So ok for 8.7 but not for 9.2.
You might think about the Turbo 8.6 who is a winner in test and also excellent on this board. I use it to develop this board.
Hope this help

In another thread Remi advised me a severne turbo 8.6 for futura 122.
I bought one and used it a few times now and I think its great sail.
It fits the board very well, I use it with a c3 venom fin 46 cm or a black projects fin type R 42.5 cm.

Thanks Remi for the advise not to buy the 9.2 turbo, its definitely to big for the 122.
