View Full Version : PHANTOM 377 vs 320

Hey, friends:

I want to buy a new raceboard, but Im not decided between the Phantom 377 and the Phantom 320. I am 48 years old, and want it to do large travels (29, 30 miles) in sea. I sail for 30 years. Good level. These are my questions:

- Speed in planning conditions (max speed)
- Speed in non planing conditions
- Entry to early planning (min wind for planning with 8.6 m)
- Facility in high wind (max wind for control it with 6.5 m sail)

- Speed in planning conditions (max speed)
320 is faster, especially in chops. in upwind 377 cannot planning. 320 can planning in upwind the start depends on your weight.
- Speed in non planning conditions
377 is faster to any direction specially in upwind, when both board use dagger board.
- Entry to early planning (min wind for planning with 8.6 m)
really depends on your weight and pumping. compares average 377 down wind 12 knots, 320 down wind 10 knots, 320 upwind 12-14 knots depends on angle.
- Facility in high wind (max wind for control it with 6.5 m sail)
320 more controllable and fast in strong wind. 25 knots easy to handle, but still depends on your weight, chops and sail trimming. 377 is more challenging in this condition.

My weight is 77 Kilos. I think I will decide to buy 320. My reasons:

- More economic
- Better final speed
- Less fragile (construction tufskin opposite to carbon)
- I do not official racing

I have a 320 and have been extremely happy with this board

I've been sailing ten times more often, always with pleasure

What year model is your Phantom 320?
What construction.....carbon/ wood carbon/ Technora/ or Tuf Skin?
Not sure the Tuf Skin (@ 6% weight increase) will perform as well as the other
constructions.
Durable......yes! Performance.....not so much!

I thought that the Phantom 320 only was constructed in Tufskin. Carbon for the 377. Can someone confirm which will be the constructions of the Phatom 320 for 2013?.

Hi Unregistered

The Phantom Race 320 is only available Tufskin Ast since the beginning and still in the Order Form, so you can contact your distributor to order it.
This board was our top board for the Hybrid class was limite to 320 but not anymore due to class rules change for 310 Max. So can't race with it now to get good result vs Phantom Race 377 due to the fact that the only Race Board Class can accept it. But still a very nice board to enjoy ligth winds condition even planning ones.

Thank Remi for your reply. I dont race in offical events, then Im sure I will enjoy the board (I ordered and have to wait until March!!!!).

I have a Severne Turbo in 8.6 (2011), and a North Ram F8 in 6.9. Do you think I can sail the Phantom 320 with them, or its better to sale them and buy a especific race sail?. Witch one? Can you give me two or three options?

I sailed the 320 with a North Warp 9.5 and a North Ram 8.0, in both cases it was fine

I also used the 320 sometimes with a North Duke 6.9, but it's a bit too small for the board

Hi Txikotia,

You are not racing so the Turbo 8.6 will be perfect for your use, same for the Ram 6.9 when wind will be to strong for the 8.6.

where i live, the 380 costs twice as much as the 320
so, unless one is into racing, has too much money, or is an idiot, why would they purchase a 380
the 320 is a well accepted board and should NOT have been replaced as a race class

320 is board optimum in case you give, when considerations of all type is made known.
price is good for 320, is more high with 377, but does one get more for money ? hmmm all out race yes gofor the big board , but for fun-board enjoyment prolly not.
in the high spped carve gybe, the swing weight 320m is less then the bigger board with bow so far away from sailor plaiing in straps.
so for example, doing the gybe and whan in chop, the swing weight is like a up down pendulaum and can be a method of inertial coupling over waves face when there is hull bounce.
then easier to catch a rail when bounce of board is low and rail hits water surface causing a straight line tracking with board , while body is still decribing an arc, this then will be condusive to a be fall whan body intesects water LOL !
but contrary opnion for all out race, 377 long waterline upwind acts as lateral resistance force causing great tracking with board railed up dagger down , can be very speedy and nice.
aroudn race course this allows to get to upwind mark faster and leave the 320 behind in all winds , 320 off the wind , swure but can it catch 377. me guess not deference makes this up.
with 377 yes performance maxed but sailor must be max too, 320 enjoyment there without sailor being max, but max can enjoy too !
