View Full Version : Formula Sails- Nitro 2 or Tushingham Spitfire

I would love to hear some opinions regarding these two sail designs. I have the option of buying some well used 2001 Nitro 2 sails or much more recent 2005 Tushingham Spitfires for a similar price. I know that the Nitro 2 was a World Cup winning sail and you don`t see many Tushinghams on the PWA tour, but is it possible that the 4 years difference in design technology could even things out?

I use this sails before to go to Severne, and I prefer the Spitfire compare to the Nitro. The Tushingham have more power and more stable.

By the way, I heard that Tushinghams can be difficult to rig. How do the Spitfires compare to other race sails (especially Nitro 2's) in this regard?

I own a Nitro 2 10.9 and Tushingham Spitfire 10.0. Both are fairly straightforward to rig but are 'old-fashioned' in that the mast is sleeved 'through' the 4 camber inducers (not snapped on after downhauling). The cams nearly always stay on during rigging (you have to be very clumsy to have a problem). As is the case with all large sails a lot of downhaul is needed. Both have triple pulleys in the tack. I manage without a downhaul winch, but they are a good idea. I have problems getting the inducers to rotate on both these sails after tacking/gybing - any advice out there?!!?

That's good to know Steve. Some people say the the Tushinghams are really hard to pull over the mast because of lots of cam pressure. Maybe this doesn`t apply to Spitfires. What do you think of the performance of the Spitfire compared to the Nitro2?

I hava 2005 Spitfire 11,0m2. There is not as much tension needed for rigging as earlier Tushingham Formula sails, but some kind of tool is nice to have not to injure your back!

have used all the different spitfire's from 11.8 to 9.00.All very easy to rig and deffinatly better alround preformance than the Gaastra.

I would try putting in some cams from another sail. A smaller distance on the cam from the mast bearing surface to batten end should result in easier rotation.

How easy is it to remove/replace the cams? The top one is quite a way up from the boom cutout. Is there a lubricant that could help rotation?

It could be impossible without undoing the luff pocket seam if there are no zips or openings for that cam. I guess some spray on silicone lubricant could work but I havn`t tried it so I`m not much help there.
