View Full Version : Sore hands. Do I have a skin problem?

Over the past months, I haven't been sailing as much as I usually do however I have just come in from a 2 hr session.

Now the problem is that my hands are very sore. I can handle the pain. That is fine. However over the past year, after a sail, the skin on my fingers and palms feels very tight, is red, and have vertical type creases down my fingers. My skin sort of feels dry and tight. Has anybody else experienced this? Am I developing some sort of psoriasis or something similar or is it normal? I dont recall the same feeling about 10 yrs ago when I started windsurfing.

ahahah Yah, I have this problem, especially when I wasn't using the harness at the beginning. Do you have the blisters or calucis on the palm right between the actual palm and the fingers? I don't think anything is wrong. After a good sesh, I can feel my hands and they are very smooth, a little redish and I do have those crease lines as you say.

Its just normal I think for some people. Or maybe some booms. I have a standard boom diametre (the bigger one) and the grip has warn down.

what boom do you have? I have the chinook compitition

I was using an 07 North silver boom. Actually the problem has been worse with this boom. Maybe the grip isn't as good from that perspective.

And of course I need to sail more often!

It just felt weird because my the skin on my hands felt so tight when I tried to open out my fingers!

I just got back from a 6 + hour sesh and I have a total of 9 blisters unpopped and 3 popped on my hands... my skin is tight, I can't feel the tips of my fingers, I can't open my hand all the way...

BUT WHAT A SESH! Blasting around for the first time powered up on my nice new 7.6 Naish Redline. Fast sail!!!!! lol And gets your planing pretty early with some pumping (persuation)

- get gloves
- learn to commit 100% to your harness (picture I saw was showing something else)
- yes, if you surf a lot the skin on your hands thicken

I have AWAYS worn gloves over the last 23 years of windsurfing, with NEVER a blister. I get calluses, which peal off from time to time. I work out on weights regularly, but don't wear gloves, which helps toughen the hands. Also, no blisters lifting weights.

My favorite glove made by Trophy is no longer available, but am now using a glove made by Hobey. The gloves have with half fingers, and they seem to improve my grip, which means less fatigue.

Also, salt water seems to be rougher on the hands, but most of my sailing is in fresh water.

I used to have a similar problem: after a few hours session my hands were a disaster!
I got half fingered gloves and I've solved this once for all..
Get them quite small becouse if they're big they'll get you some problems..

Good luck!
