Hello Ian and SB team,

What are the main diff between the ST115 '05 vs the '07 models? The stock fin for 05 was 32cm whereas on the 07 model was a 38cm. I suppose the fin range for both models are the same..ie.30~40cm?

cheers

Hi there.

Both boards are fundamentally similar in ride size / performance, sail and fin sizing etc. The major design evolution in the '07 ST115 is the revised rocker line which for '07 was based on the proven Sonic 85, combined with a lower, shorter nose, which gave the '07 some extra hi wind/hi speed control. There are the usual spread of techology/construction/accessory upgrades (inc better pads and straps).

For 2007 the ST stock fins were upgraded to a new sizing which delivered fins that are more aligned with the low-mid freeride performance range for each board size, rather than the mid-hi wind supercross of previous generations, whilst at the same time the fin design (and subsequent sizing) was also revised from mid/low aspect ration of the older range to a newer, faster, higher AR. So the new fins are "bigger" in cm mechanical terms because 1) they are actually specced a bit bigger in "performance size" PLUS 2) the increase in AR actually further increases the (mechanical) size (dimension) further, without itself effecting "performance" size.

Hi Ian,

Appreciate your inputs !

Which 2 fin sizes would you recommend for this board, which I plan to use on sail sizes :-

1) 6.5 and
2) 7.5

both are free race sails. > my weight=75kg sailing in moderately choppy waters 12~20 knots conditions.

Thanks & best regards!

Hi Ken,

For general blasting sailing on ST115 using higher AR fins (as 2007 and similar) :

6.5m light to medium power ~36cm (could double to 38cm from 7.5 at a pinch)
6.5m well powered ~ 32-34cm
7.5m light to medium power ~38-40cm
7.5m well powered ~ 34-36cm

That doesn't give you 2 exact sizes - but it helps you find the optimum 2!
(and maybe more important, the tuning relationship between sizes)
Lower AR fins would be shorter for the sail/wind range (aprox 2-3cm in this range)

Hi Ian,

looks like 34cm and 38cm should cover the whole range.
Also, do you recommend soft or hard fins?

Thanks!

07' pads are defintely better, none have come off so far.

Hi Ken,

It really depends a lot on the actual fin make/model/series etc, but unless you're a super powerful fin loader for your weight (they exist !) with 75 kg for ST115 freerace sailing in these sizes I would suggest medium, trending towards harder in the smaller fin/higher wind range, but also noting that the "softer than hard" fins have some comfort/control advantage for light to medium weight riders.

I am 68kg, use a 6,5 Redline and a St 115.
I am using a 32 slalom fin.
Do you think it,s ok ?? Should I get a bigger fin ??

For 68kg / ST115, 32cm slalom will be fine in mid to well powered 6.5 conditions. If you're underpowered or light 6.5m then a 34-36cm could be an option to help boost bottom end/upwind, but as a "one size" solution for your combination, 32cm slalom will be close to ideal.

hi Ian,

One more question, what is the recommended foot strap positions for slalom blasting?

my current setting:
front strap : 1st hole
back strap : mid hole
