Hey!

My $0.02 on new site (from point of view web developer with 10 years experience):
1. Hate flash based sites - I can't install flash, not allowed (and not only me). So I see nothing. If you want to use flash that much, you have to implement at least possibility to swich to HTML based site, so everybody can see it.
2. Hate flash based sites - Where is navigation?
3. Forum - Where is navigation?
4. Guys! You succefully manage to screw used to be pretty good site!

I like the new site. The new forum software has a report post button too which should help keep the spam down. I wonder how long before someone says "you should have used phpbb"

I know some dislike flash but it is fast becoming a standard. It seems that a growing percentage of websites make heavy use of flash these days.

As for the new boards lineup there are some nice suprises. I can't wait to try a few of them.

Just because at lot of nerds want to try ourt whatever new stuff they can doesn't mean that tis good. Flash sucks:
- information gain 0
- load on pc grows
- requirements (hardware, software, securty guidlines can very soon become a problem)

not sure how robots treat flash trash, could be they ignore it -> less traffic.

but otherwise it looks quite nice (could have been done the traditional way too though except for the fancy/bothersome animations at the most uncalled for places)...

Well.. I dont have 10 years of webpage developer experience. But agree with Phill104 on the new lineups. Gotta give big credits to the one who worked it out and wanting to make a better page for the 2008 looks ( Against all odds )
It is the same tone and style as their new 2008 product catalog though, if you have seen their catalog already. Sure they will have some more adjustments on details further as you guys comment.

The new boards look cool and I like the action videos. I've already got my fantasy board quiver worked out in my mind. :)

The preview vids are excellent, easily the best new site feature.
Board graphics top last year.
Nice new fresh look all round.
Board range nicely re-organised.
Glad to see my old favourite the Start looking more like the original overachiever :-)
Congratulations.

I agree with Andrew. The site is crap. Slow and unresponsive. You've also managed to lose the archives link to older boards and the link to the Sales, Marketing etc 'contact us' page that I was going to use to winge about this site doesn't work! Dump this crap Starboard it isn't doing your brand-name any good.

Maybe this is the thread to post little mistakes within the new website:

1)
http://www.star-board.com/2008/pages.../v_formula.php
The specifications of the Formula might be right, but on the website the figures are in the wrong column within the spreadsheet.

2)
Clicking the "send" button on the contact form for the marketing department leads to an error.

I like the new website though it is not faster than the old one. I hope with the products it will be the other way round.

Regards
Andy

Well, I'm not a software specialist by any means, so much of the comments above don't really mean anything to me, but I wonder if I'm missing anything concerning the new site. What I'm seeing is really bare bones, and it lacks any kind of graphics, photos, etc. When I open the website, literally half the visible screen is simply blank space. It's a bit unusal, so I'm wondering what's up.

I'm afraid that something is quite wrong here how this site works on my computer (an Apple Powerbook). Very awkward indeed! I'm really at a total loss here how to get on track

I've just checked it on my powerbook using safari and it looks fine. It also looks fine on 4 other browsers I've tried so it looks like it must be local to you.

Thanks for your support Andy. And sorry for your inconvenience. There're so many details to take care and to fix when we transfer to a new system for '08 also there're slightly different between our testing server and our production server.

Anyway, right now I've got everything I need for the contact us form so I should be able to bring it up within 5 hours from now. (gotta cross my fingers now :-)

Cheer,
Tony.

I have to agree with the voices that say 'Dump the Flash'.It is slow and cumbersome even on a fast connection and is just bloody frustrating on dial up. This is a technology for the top level of the 'haves' on fast internet. Not only that, though my work servers parts of the implementation are just simply blocked so on the home page I don't even get the navigation menus. I really like to overall style/appearance but not the flash!

I think the apple issues are browser based - nothing to do with starboard's site.

Use safari or firefox when using apples - the site will work perfectly using these browsers. Firefox is a quick and easy download (17mb) and works a charm

as far as i am aware microsoft explorer for apple osx doesnt work with alot of new stuff as it hasnt been updated in years. Bin it!

Yeah, and the next thing you're going to tell is we have to bottle the air we need to go windsurfing...

I think the users asked for a simple, working and fast website
you delivered a nice looking one (once every thing is installed for some)
and tried out a lot of new technologies because they (*b) let you play around again, but
not simple, not working, not fast.

Linke in the old version you still can't "open link in new window" which is quite frustrating.

Guys,

Let's face it! Flash good for some personal or entartaiment web sites ... BUT NOT FOR BUSINESS! So damp the flash ... or you can add flash sniffer and if user doesn't have latest version of flash installed or doesn't want to use flash, switch to HTML site. HTML based sites looks same but faster, lighter and don't have navigation problems of flash.

Thanks Ola H for your help on this. You pinpointed my problem exactly and the download resolved everything, as I now have the graphic content and basic navigation tools that were missing earlier.

I have to totally disagree with you there. There are very few examples of webpages these days that pass those validation tests including some of the worlds biggests sites such as www.bbc.co.uk, youtube or wikipedia to name but a few.

Tony has obviously put a lot of work into this site. Compared to last years switchover it has gone very smoothly. There will always be those that criticise or dislike change. It still shows the new range very well and has some nice features. I'm sure things such as the archive of previous sites will come with time.

When all is said and done, Starboard are in the business of producing boards and quite rightly so they put a huge amount of effort into producing an excellent product range. The website comes well down the list in the priorities and requires a lot of work from the whole team. Would you rather the whole team forgot the boards and went into the web business?

They are pop-ups and are probably being blocked by your pop-up blocker so turn it off for this site

Okay.. with the risk of sounding like en idiot. WHAT IS FLASH???? ;-)

I like the new webside. It's some kind of retro and looking forward at the same time.
And GREAT RANGE once again..
Only one problem. Why is it sooo complicated to go into the board range?
It should belike :
1) Click on the "board range" bottom
2) an image with the whole line appears
3) click on the board type you find interesting (and all the details will be there)..

As it is now you have to walk step by step into the "jungle" and when you hit the "back" button, you're all the way outside the shop and you have to start all over again..

Good job

Thanks, it worked. It's seems ridiculous to have to turn stuff off to see your site. Pix are the most important thing on a site and shouldn't be hard to see. No other ws site that I visited had this problem. Also nothing will open in a new tab. I like to click on the wheel on my mouse and open stuff in a new tab, but nothing on this site does.

I agree with the previouse guy and hate the hover type menus on sites these days. Just make it either or.

I think also, there is one level of menus too much, for boards pages. Should be enough, if i go to products/boards/isonic and click on that name and go directly on overview page. And pictures of boards on that page also, please. It was good, that all sizes were side by side and from there you go to bigger picture.

You have at least one broken link on the MyBoard page... I didn't look through this whole thread to see if someone else has mentioned, and I didn't test other links. The Futura 111 link has a case sensitivity issue. v_Futura.php should be replaced with v_futura.php for the link to work.

Thanks Mr.Unregistered for inform me about the Html validation. I'll look into it together with our web designer and improve it as necessary.

Thanks Phil104. Actually I do mainly support and technical stuffs (server, programming, application, etc...) not the design. You may never think about me if everything is working too smooth ;-)

The 2007 arcive is on the way. Technically, it's so much different from 2006 so we need a bit more time to prepare it.

Have to add my name to those who say Flash sucks. I never bother going to the F2 , Naish and other windsurfing sites that use this format. It's more trouble than it's worth and any attempt just reinforces how frustrating it is to navigate those sites.
My view is people visit your site for information not entertainment.

im still a bit confused about all the different colours for the icons when you first open the forum... does it still sort the posts that are newest to oldest? Why are they different colours!!!!!!!!!!! and how do I change my profile? or can you... avatars were awsome before... is this stuff coming still?

I am not really that picky about websites for windsurfing products. You shouldn't buy something because its got a great website... I would rather see starboard put the extra effort into board production and design... websites just need basics and ahve to have the information... c'est tout

just my opinion, I like the site in most ways...
