I have starboard Kombat 95l 2005 but only with 23cm wave fin. What fin whould you recommend for 6-6.5 sails in freemove mode in choppy water?
I was thinking myself about Drake CrossOver 30cm or FreeRide Flow 30cm...

BTW, my weight is 70kg. Level: intermediate (stabilizing carving jibes and jumps).

For my Kombat 96 ('06) with a 6.5 Retro @ 185lbs I sail with a 30cm gsport free-ride. It works excellent with great range.
I wondered if the 30cm would be small but it's not. I didn't want to go bigger due to the US box.

I would say the Drake Crossover 28 for your 6.0 and 30 cm for your 6.5 sails for freemove, freeride blasting and B&J.
I'm using the stock Drake Freeride Flow 30 cm on Kombat 86 (and Kombat 95) with wave NR 6.2 or freemove Jet 6.9 sail with my 65 kg (straps x 4 all back and outboard) for freeriding.
A wave onshore NorthShore 9.0" fin (23 cm) is fine with same sails for light wind waveriding (straps x 3 all front and inboard) whereas the Drake stock Natural Wave 24 cm is too small with these 2 sails (much less surface).

Thank you, mates! Very well, I think I will go for Drake CrossOver 30cm.
Have a nice wind! =)

Hi all again. Winter is about to end =))) It is time to order the fin.
But I'm in doubt, how much more up-wind perfomance Drake Freeride gives compared to Kombat?
I have such a spot that I have to make upwind few times in very short distances 50-150m before there is enough room for blasting...

I wouldn't worry about upwind drive too much, Drake Crossover 30 will give you enough, and will be more fun through the lumps. I have a Kombat 86 (2006 model) and it came with 30cm Freeride flow. I've never liked it much, I've tried other fins and they suit Kombat much better (Drake Crossover, Select FSW, several wave fins, etc).

I agree with Screamer. The Freeride flow will not add significant upwind drive compared to the Crossover. In fact, unless your in very high speed mode, the extra profile of the Crossover might even prove more effective upwind, particularly in the kind of hard upwind/short distance you're talking about.
Again agreeing with Screamer, I think the Crossover is simply a better fin.
As for size, it is highly personal. Both 30 and 28 would be OK. Also the 28 will give you SIGNIFICANTLY more upwind drive than your current fin and for most persons be OK also with a 6.5. I use the Crossover 28 all the way up to 7.0. BUt other might prefer a bigger fin for different reasons.

I had a K95 for 2 seasons.Used a 32cm fin for 6.2. It was fine.Didnt use it with any bigger sails.Swopped to 28cm for 5.4 and 5.(Didnt use 23???!!!)

30 or 32CM

OK, then Crossover 30 then. =)
By the way Drake is G10 but 2 times more expensive than MFC Cross.

you have used a 7.0m on the Kombat 95/96/97?
I have a 7.0 north natural for use on my carve 131, but was curious whether I could try it on my Kombat 96 ?? (i have a MFC freewave 28cm fin). max recommended sail size on the Kombat 96 is 6.5m. I weigh 78kg.

Hi Mitchiedog, do you like you MFC fin? Does it make good upwind?
(There is no 30cm Drake on stock at my closest dealer, but there is MFC...)
27th February 2008, 03:36 AM
Mitchiedog, have you tried your MFC freewave in freeride mode (footstraps back and out) with 6.0 sail?
27th February 2008, 01:07 PM
Kimax the 28 MFC freewave is a good fin, good upwind, but Ive not had it in freeride mode with the straps out (always centre rear strap) and the largest sail ive used is 5.7. You might want the 30cm version.

mitchiedog, yes I'm about 30cm or even 32cm... but need to know is it good for freeride mode. MFC positions it as a freestyle-wave fin... nothing about freeride...

I have written question to mauifin.com "For a personalized fin suggestion CLICK HERE." but now answer in two days... =) Then I'll wait until Drake is available at my dealer.

Now I have an answer form mauifin.com! Yes, they promise it to work in Free-ride mode. =)
