My wife and I have been to several sailing spots and have enjoyed pretty good success. We've moved from Manitoba to the West Coast (Vancouver area) and are looking for next year's vacation destination. Cuz we're out west now, we think we should head west, to the east. I see on the StarBoard site that there are quite a few Asian windsurf rental destinations. Our goal is to duplicate positive experiences we have had in places like Margarita and Belize. In these places, we found cheap accomodations; great conditions; inexpensive food/beer; terrific gear. This is of particular importance as we look for an Asian location where we can stay for a longer period of time -- it's a far go and we'd want to stay for three weeks or a month. I've spoken to travellers who have had awesome trips to places like Fiji - and really economical too. We are in our 50's but adventurous and don't mind roughing it a bit. A shack is fine so long as it's safe, quiet and the resident pests are well-behaved. We are windsurfers - not kite folks. Any advice?

The windiest time for the Far East is Nov-March roughly. That is North East Monsoon season.
Taiwan (Penghu) is windiest with JP/NP kit
Mui Ne (Vietnam) is magic. Picturesque, strong wind. Starboard/Severne kit.
Malaysia, Thailand, Phillipines and Indonesia have lighter winds than the 2 above.
Of those 4, Thailand has the best rental kit whilst Phillipines and Indonesia probably have the lowest cost of living.

I was in Vietnam this New Year 2008, for two weeks. Very very nice place! I would recommend it for pieceful and relaxing atmosphere. After 12 o'clock resort is sleeping! Especially if you have very good hotel (120$ per night in hight season you will get 6* service and attention)!
But I think this is mostly kite place.
1) wind was not so strong during 2 weeks (5 days no wind at all)
2) main gear is 110-140l boards + 6-7m2 sails
3) there is only one decent windsurf rental and around 10 kite rentals...
