View Full Version : Futura 122 or 133?
6th March 2008, 06:23 PM
A friend ask me about the right choice for his Futura. His data:
- 78 kgs
- Lakes and sea
- 9/10 - 16 knots
- up to 8.8m freerace (2006 Gunsails Tempo) sail
Which would be the best futura size for him?
Which aditional fin (size/model) will need to improve lightwind performance?
He want to maximize lightwind performance, but he see Fut133 too wide (bouncing with chop) with 16 knots.
He initially plan to buy Fut122 and look for a aditional big race fin (size?) for lightwind.
Please, any comments/help for my friend?

I have the same problem as your friend. No one seems to care since and I do not have any advice . But I belive 133 it would be suitable for both your friend and I since he want to have good performances in light winds.
If you have any news please do no hesitate to tell me!

I his case, i would go for 133, but he is under 80 kgs and he want a board very balanced in HW too. Is his choice, not for me.
In fact, im over +80 kg and will go for 155 which let me cover the 6.5m -- 8.7m sail range.
I initially thought Fut155 would work fine with 7.5m-8.7m and And leaving the small board (122ltrs) for 6.5m sail..... but i tried 6.5m with Fut155 and she passes through the chop pretty well.
Over 8,7m i will use FW + 11m.
Im happy to find a board like Fut155 with such wide wind range, let me use 6.5m 7.7m and 8.7m (2 masts and 1 boom) Allowing me to downsize my quiver and adapting to 90% of my spot conditions.

It seems to me you got the futura 133?
Are you happy with it?

Im actually have a IS122. The Futura i have is for the family (and for me too) the y choose the 15 liters size.
By now i sailed it one time, but im happy. Good choice.

Hi Pacs and Hyper,
I think there may be a little more here than simply width and fin size.
I have the Futura 133 and have had it out in quite a bit of wind.
Yes, it's a little wide for 20 knots, but if I tune it with the mast foot, and use a little smaller fin (42 cm) or weed fin (Tangent Dynamics Reaper or Lessacher Duo 32 cm) it works pretty well with a 5.6 m2 Sailworks Hucker.
So, if your friend really wants the lower wind performance, the Futura 133 (76 cm wide/50 cm 1' off) will give significantly better results in early planing (and you can add a 52 cm fin to enhance it even some more) over the Futura 122 (71.5 cm/ 46.7 cm 1' off).
It guess it depends on how much of the time the wind is 16 knots and higher vs how much time it's 14 knots and lower.
If mostly higher than 15 knots, and your friend doesn't sail much in < 14 knots then the Futura 122 looks pretty good.
If, on the other hand, the wind is less often over 15 knots, and your friend wants to have some performance in 12 knots with an 8.0 m2 or larger rig, then the Futura 133 is the way to go.
A bigger fin won't make up for 5 cm extra width.
If you are happy on your Futura 155 with a 6.5 m2 your friend should be equally happy with the Futura 133 in the same conditions.
Hope this helps,

Thanks so much for your high value advice.
Here we have two diferents point of view: my friend and mine.
After sailed the bigger Fut155 with 6,5m sail (im over 80 kg) i see Fut can handle more wind than initially expected. Thats why i will go bigger/ confortable.
But my friend is ligther, skilled and whish better control in HW... maybe with big rig/fin and good pump skill he would plane early in LW.
Regards and thanks a again for your help.

The large Futuras will comfortably handle quite a wind range. The 144 has been a great board for my lake sailing sessions where average wind speed may be 12 to 14 mph with gusts over 20 and lulls under 8. Planes up easily, turns very very well, goes upwind pretty well. I'm very pleased with the big Futura and highly recommend it.
