formula pro-kids for adult in high winds

Hi folks,

I just was wondering if a downsized formula -as pro-kids FW- would achieve good upwind/downwind angles when riden by an adult (~80kg) in 20+ knots, say with a 8.5m2 sail. I mean, in comparison
to angles or VMG obtained for slalom shapes


I am thinking that the sacrified speed/angle compared to a normal FW with a bigger sail -although still good enough to do a upwing/downwing course- would give in return a more controlled ride in high winds.

The question is aimed to a crazy idea of a windsurfing class consisting in 2 boards (say Serenity + small FW) and one single sail 9.0m2, that should cover 2-30+kts range with 2 specialized boards (instead of a classical longboard, that will always be a compromise)

The intention would be to maximize WINDRANGE and FUN. In low winds (<12kts) this means a pure displacement hull and REASONABLE SIZE rigs, and in hiwinds this means REASONABLE SIZE again and not very scary downwind rides at high winds.

Do you think a downsized formula could give this in high winds?

Do you like this idea of a 2board+1sail course race class?

This is a little like formula 42. Why not simply put a 75cm limit on the second board so people could 'course slalom' with existing equipment? Still thought of as the most exciting way around a course by many who did it.

Hi Mcasaldaliga,

Your idea can be good, but at this time with a soft 11m² like Overdrive with Serenity and a FE160 or the 2008 one, but with a small formula and 9m² the gap will be too big.

If I understand well from your words a small formula + 9 m2 would be ok in highs winds for an adult but very ... very far in performance compared to a standard formula equipment

And compared to a slalom gear, say Isonic 133+9m2?
I mean, comparing VMG in upwind leg. Small formula lower speed but better angle?

Hi mcasaldaliga,

If you want to use on the most bigger wind range as possible, the Serenity and the Formula 162 will be the choice with an 11m².

You can use the Serenity until max 10 knots and after go for a F162 until 30 knots. The 9m² and small formula will be too small to have decent result on a FW race course.

An iSonic 133 is design for light wind slalom, not up wind machine even we can do a correct one. But over 20 knots with 9m² that will be difficult.

The F162 is design for 6 to 35 knots on a FW race course.
