Yes, there's an approximate ratio that can be used to calculate the minimum volume for various situations. Having more volume than that is not necessarily a bad thing, though.

Click the "board size" tab and enter your weight in the box. It will calculate the ideal volume board for a beginner, the ideal volume for a first shortboard, and the minimum volume that can be tacked and uphauled by a fairly experienced windsurfer.
