View Full Version : Evo 70 - alternate fin?

I sail in the Gorge and am thinking about getting an Evo 70L for windy days (4.2m and below) and riding the river swells. I've demoed the Evo a couple of times and really like the ride it gives - very unique "skateboard" feeling. I'm wondering about the stock fin - seems like maybe it's too swept back and flexy. Has anyone tried using different fins with Evo?
Also, I agree with other posts about the footstraps - they really suck if you're have big feet and booties. I'm planning on switching to some Dakine straps ASAP.

The Drake Natural fins that EVOs (and Acids and smaller Kombats) come with is indeed a very wave oriented fin. For some more locked in powere, you can use the Drake Crossover instead (A Curtis designed fin, so you can find similar fins with Curtis).
But the Drake Natural actually works well for B&J sailing too, particularly if you choose it a bit bigger. The 08 version is a tad stiffer and does this type of sailing even better.
09 straps is bigger, btw.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I just picked up my new Evo 70L and am looking forward to giving it a good workout in the Gorge swells! I'll also try a couple different fins to see the impact on the board's handling. I'll let you know what I come up with.
I'm planning on checking out True Ames Enduro 20cm, and GSport (same as Curtis?) World Wave 21cm. Both of these claim to be for 3.0m to 4.3m sails.
I'm glad to hear the footstraps will be improved for next year.

I had my new Evo 70L out on an EPIC day at the Hatchery recently (7/6). I was overpowered on my 3.2m sail and the swells were nearly mast high at times. The board was a treat in these fierce conditions!
I tried the stock Drake fin and also a True Ames Enduro 20cm. I found that the Enduro (which is stiffer than the stock fin, but similar surface area) had more grip in the chop and "bit" better when landing jumps. In all, I think I like the Enduro better - makes the back end of the board a bit "firmer", but still keeps that groovy Evo skatiness.

Good to hear. I'll try a crossover fin myself some time.
