View Full Version : F133 as second board

My only board is now freeformula 157 2003.
I am 80 kg intermediate sailor.
The sil quiver is 9.5 7.5 6.3 5.4
inland lake with flat wather but gusty wind 10/18 Kn
open sea with thermic constant wind, good for 9.5-7.5 but very choppy.
I am looking for futura 133 as second board (or only board)
i am serching more relax in chop and a more free feeling (less "big boat" than freeformula).
I wonder about these questions:
real compatibility F133-9.5
early planing loss from (heavy) FF157 to F133 technora
difference in chop handling

I have the Futura 133 this year, and I've sailed it with a 9.5 m2 Sailworks Retro with
I found the wider Futura 155 (85.0 cm vs 76.0 cm for the F 133) planes earlier/works better with the 9.5 m2, but the F 155 would be too similar to your Free Formula 157.
You will get quite a bit better "over the chop" performance with the F 133 vs the FF-157.
So, with the Futura 133 and FF-157 you will increase your range quite a bit.
I wonder at your question about the Futura 133 and your 9.5 m2 sail?
If you are indeed going for a 2 board quiver, I'd suggest the 9.5 will work better on the FF-157 and use your 7.5 and smaller rigs on the Futura 133.
If you were looking for a one board solution to replace your Free Formula 157 then the 133 would be a very good choice, but if you use the 9.5 most of the time, then the Futura 144 (77.5 cm wide) would probably be a better choice.
If you are looking to really extend your range, at 80 Kg. in fresh water, perhaps the Futura 122 and your FF-157 would be a better combination giving you a board that's really at it's optimum on a 7.5 m2 rig (the Futura 122) and your larger wider Free Formula 157 for light wind days and your 9.5 m2 rig.
You have a bit of a gap in your sail quiver with 7.5 to 9.5.
Hope this helps,

tanks for your answer,
yes, i have a bit of gap from 7,5 and 9,5.
In my holiday spot (costa brava catalunya) 8-8,6 may be the better size for thermical wind.
In your opinion the size 8-8,6 work better with F122 or FF157?

If you are powered up on the 8.0-8.6 m2 it should work nicely on the Futura 122.
If you are not powered up (and you need to go out and experiment to figure out what the windspeed and water surface conditions are that will support easily planing on the
Futura 122) then your Free Formula 157 will be the better choice.
I think the Futura 122 is really optimized at about 7.5 m2.
You can sail a meter larger, but your wider FF-157 will still plane earlier with the 9.5 m2.
If you get windspeeds of 12 knots (F4 Bft/6.2 m/s) or more, then the Futura 122 with the 8.0 m2 + rig would seem the best way to go at your weight.
Hope this helps,
