Hi.
I'm getting back into my windsurfing after a few years away. I've got an F2 Ride 282 (115l) and a small Mistral (85l) for when it's really blowing. My main rigs are Sailworks 6.0m and 7.4m race sails. I'm going to get an 8.5m and would like a new board to go with it. I'm around 80kg and would like to get going in the lighter winds when my 115l board isn't suitable. I had a Futura 144 in mind but have read some good comments about the 133. Any thoughts?

I would take the F 144, it will give you best light wind range in your 3 board quiver.
It is super fast, jibes like a dream. You will be surprised how much it will overlap your 115 L board.
I (90+ kg) use mostly 8,5 Overdrive, Code Red 7,7 Gator 6,5 even Code Red 6,1 on it.

I don't think you need such a big board (144) because:
a) you're not that heavy and
b) you're not going to use monster rig (9.5+)
Yes, a 144 will give you better low end, but not needed imho. Wrt sails I think 7.5-8.5 spread is a bit close (for a freerider), you can go from 7.5 to a 9.0 safely. Try 133/144 if you can.

Interesting points, thanks. Here's the thing, if I go for the 133, will it make my 115l board a bit redundant? I like my F2 and have had it for many years (as it used to be my only board) but being an old design it's great when it blows but no much fun when its not so windy. Also I'm pretty new to these 'monster' rigs - as I said, my largest rig is a 7.4 and I've used an 8.5 on holiday but never a 9.0! So the choice. Go with a 133 which might cross over with my 115l or go bigger with a 144 and increase the time I can have on the water. Hmmmm.

Sure, the decision her is not so easy. It depends on other variables too.
For 85 kg+ rider the 144 for sure, for <80kg maybe more the 133.Onshore or offshore winds, gusty with holes when light?
Water state and wind quality when on the 133/144, is important to know.
Big waves/swell (133) or more flat water/chop (144).
And finally if you want max light wind performance go for de 144, esp. if you keep the Ride 115 L.
F133 is 77cm wide, tail 49,2 cm
F144 is 79 cm wide, tail 50 cm
So not a huge diff. anyway. OK there is different rocker line.
Straps out and back and you are very close to iSonic 133 light wind slalom performance.
So we are talking about planing in 10-12 knots with your weight

Futura 133 247.5 77.0 49.2 7.71 8.08 6.0-9.5
Futura 144 246.0 79.0 50.0 8.25 8.61 6.5-10.0

Regarding 7,4 race to 8,5 may or may not be to close, depends on type of sail.
A 7,4 race sail is medium slalom sail so normally no big light wind performance, but range in medium to strong wind sailing well powered up.
Modern 8,3 to 9,0 light wind slalom( not an old 8,5-9 m2 hard wind formula sail) or free race sail have much more grunt. They are lighter and softer, better to pump on plane and plane better through lulls. So 7,4 race to lets say 8,5 Overdrive, NP V8, Severne Element or likes or even modern light wind slalom sails are a perfect gap. 10 m2 for free ride only makes sense on a formula board IMHO.
OK but I would not call it a mistake if you take the 133.

I've sailed f2Ride 100-130 litres (but not 115), they are long and narrow by today's standards, how wide is it? I believe Futura 101 will easily carry the same sails as your 115. I say this because judging by volume 115-133 may be too close, but judging by sail carrying and wind range it may be a good spread, I'm not sure.
133 and 144 are close in dimensions. I wouldn't buy a board for max lightwind performance and then only use it with a rig that's middle of it's sail range (8.5), you're not using that board to the max then. Others opinions may differ.

PS As LK says, sail type is important. A Hellium 8.5 is the equivalent of 9.5-10 race sail wrt low end grunt, I believe.

I'll have a look at the F2 re its width - it is an old long and narrow board compared to todays designs. You're definately right with regards my 7.4 race sail - it does need a bit of a blow to get going. It's an old Sailworks XT with 4 full cams, is stable as anything in a blow - I can carry it when most others are struggling with a 5.5. However it's the biggest thing I would like to cary on the F2. My 6m is an old Sailworks Bravo (3 micro cams) which is lovely, light and sometimes feels like it has almost as much grunt as the 7.4. I could always go for the 144 and get a 9m sail but have never considered a sail this big. Also I musn't forget that I'm getting back to windsurfing after quite a long break and due to family commitments, won't be able to get out as much as I would like so I don't want life to be too difficult on the board!

To go back to your first post "I'm around 80kg and would like to get going in the lighter winds when my 115l board isn't suitable", a futura133 will already give you MASSIVE advantage with regard to early planing, paired with an 8.5-9 twin cam (not a race sail). For some people, 8.5 is a kind of upper limit because there is another consideration - many are rigged on a 490 mast, whereas a 9.0 usually needs a 520 (impacts both handling and your wallet). Just a thought.

This is a wild guess, but I think you'll want to change 115 too at some point in the future (once you're accustomed to new wider shapes).

Thanks Screamer, I think you may be right regarding changing the 115l at some stage - just the normal problem with money! In the meantime, I guess the decision is whether there's any benefit of getting a 144 if I only go up to an 8.5m sail - will it significantly add to the fun time I could have on the water compared with a 133? Perhaps I just get rid of the 115l (not that I'd get much for it) go with my little 85l Mistral for when it really blows, invest in an 8.5m sail and use the 133 for the rest of the time.

Exactly. In my opinion you won't add anything significant with a 144. You would need it for one of those reasons: 1. very early intermediate who needs masses of stability, 2. a heavyweight rider, or 3. massive rig to carry
Some sailors use 8.5 on an F122 - but 133 is your safer bet.

Futuras have more wind range than old F2 rides, but I don't think you could safely go from 77cm 133 straight to a (56cm narrow?) 85 Mistral. Keep the 115 in the beginning and see how they all overlap.

One possible suggestion: a good minimalist quiver of 2 boards covering an awful lot could be F122/133 + Kode86/96. Risky without trying it though.

Hi Lakkabay,

I have got the F133 with 6.7 and 8.0 sails and this really is a fast board. I have no comparison though with the 144 but your last comment to me does make sense. Get rid of the 115 and go with the small board when your socks are blowing of your shoes and sails the 133 in all other occassions. only have 1 board and the F133 really gives me a great time.

My advise, go with your suggestion you made in your last post. Get rid of the 115 and go sail the 133. I have that one too and have 2 sails a 6.7 hellcat and the 8.0 V6, am 80 kg full of muscle too :-) and this combination really gives you a lot of speed with Bft 4-5.
