No mcross i cannot go and test the US, that would be the best thing to do but i have never seen it here .

I use a 10m Point 7 AC1, it only uses a 520 mast so it feels loads lighter than 11m formula sails than tend to use 550 masts.To be honest it doesn't plane that much earlier than my 8.6m Severne Turbo which I truly love using on those days where there are holes in the wind. My board is the 2013 model but the 2011/12 are just as good. I used to own a formula board and boy did it plane early and it flew upwind but it just isn't fun like the US. I'm sure you would get a couple of knots more out of an isonic but you would fiind the US easier to gybe, I am 86 Kg's. No idea of lower wind speed to get it planning but my guess is around 9-10 knots.
Can't you go and demo one? Honestly if you are not racing get a US

|OZI||I would also consider 117W with an 8.6. I am 82kg and this is my light wind choice. Can get planning in 10-12 knots. 127 with 9.2/9.6, you would probably get planning in 8-10 knots.|

mcross thanks again for answering , if I may ask you few questions ... which rig do you use with your US? How much do you weight? How many knots do you need to start planning? Did you use a formula before? By reading some of your messages it's clear you greatly enjoy your US , asking on forums and personally with some windsurfers i got mixed opinions (consensus is speed=isonic 127 , planing=formula) , but , of course , nobody i spoke with had the US but only slalom or formula boards ..... so it could be just prejudice or maybe not

|mcross19||You don't need 11m+ sails to get the best out of an Ultrasonic something around 9.5-10 works equally as well if you get the right sail ie a slalom sail which are more powerful than a same size Formula sail. The ultrasonic is comfortable to be in the straps all day long whereas the Formula board is quite extreme but would plane marginally earlier. Lastly the Ultrasonic may plane through the lulls better than the 127 but having not tried them I couldn't say for definite.|

|max1ci6||Thanks Patrick for your detailed answer , I think that if i need a formula rig (11m) to plane in 8-10 knots with US then , probably , it makes more sense to get a formula board and go fully formula . If with a 9/9.5 and a 127 isonic i will plane in 10-15knt i would be pretty happy . I understand US will plane early than a IS127 with the same fin and rig ... still haven't made my mind|

To get the most out of the Ultrasonic and plan in 8-12kts you will need a big rig, 11m + 550 mast + formula boom. But even with a 9.6 and big fin will plan earlier than 127.
Probably 1-2 knots in it at the low end with the same rig? With a big rig the Ultrasonic will be planing 3-4 knots earlier.

first thanks for answering (i am the original first poster) , would a Isonic 127 (2013) work the same in my conditions? I can get this more easily and save some money too .
