The big news is that they just smashed the nautical mile record: 50.17 knots over a a nautical mile (not 500m but 1852 of those!) in open ocean in 25-30 knots of wind! simply amazing and completely out of reach for any other vessel! http://www.sail-world.com/USA/lHydro...cal-mile/63223 |

Impressive... But hitting and keeping an average speed over 500 metres are quite different tasks. Think about an ice boat. With an old fashioned heavy rig it easily hits +100 km/h.. It´s all down to the drag factor. If we can eliminate drag through the water from the board and fin my old 5.75 wave sail can bring me up to 70 knots... ;-)) |

Nope.. You are right, it seems like it happened some six weeks ago. I didn't notice it until now. I wonder if windsurfing ever will win this title back? I don't think so. With all respect to Albeau and the other speed guys, the technology behind Hydroptere is just too advanced... ;-) Per |

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Hydroptere has been considered the fastest sailing craft for a while now. Whether they just made it official, though, is another matter. |
