Unregistered FYI ,
I was the origianl poster, and I was lucky enough to be in maui lasy week.
I spoke to tom hammerton at hot sails maui, and he didnt think a solvent based paint would affect the glue on a sail.
he did say however is that everything seems to have issues sticking to monofilm over the long run.
he thought vinyl was ones best bet.

Unregistered you would have to weigh the benefit of having UV rays blocked by the paint...

Ken I have seen racers use aerosol spray paint to paint numbers on sails using a stencil, but I don't know if the paints were water based or not. I am guessing not.

No apparent damage after a year or two of service.

Unregistered ... or go to HSM Superfreak, and you can have even the strangest drawing you desire built into your sail, not only painted over. But no monofilm, only dacron.

Roger Hi shred,
I'd be very careful and look for a water base paint.
Any sort of epoxy paint will have solvent in it that might soften or destroy
the mono film.
Also, keep any sort of paint away from the seams as most of them are glued
and then stitched so any solvent in the paint would soften the glue.
Have you thought of having a "wrap" place ( they make "wraps" for graphics on
vehicles) make you big stickers that have the graphics and effects you want?
Hope this helps

painting monofilm

I know this is may not be the most appropriate forum but , I am wondering if one can paint monofilm without the paint effecting the monofilm in a negetive way
and if there is a paint that works what will stick?.
my idea is to spraybomb, sorrry use "spray paint" as this has multiple options for colour, and one can get metallic options.
like to do my own art on my sail
ideas imput welcome.
