Roger Hi UnReg,
The two holes are for you to attach the tether line.
In your kit, there should be a short piece of nylon webbing (folded over on itself with
2 screws (they are shorter, therefore special, so do not mix them with the footstrap screws.
The holes are in an insert very smilar (just smaller) to the footstrap screw inserts on the
top side of your new board. They are completely sealed at the bottom of the holes so
you will have no leaks or other issues.
Will these holes affect performance.... not if you are using the board correctly.
When you get enough speed for the holes to make any difference, you will be planing
and that part of the board will be clear of the water.
The waterline, on your Rio, will move back to just under the front footstraps (in the rearmost
and outboard positions).
So, no worries...... and if you decide to use a tether to teach beginners, you are all set.
To rig a tether line, get a couple of 6 oz. fishing sinkers (lead weights) and tie them on to a light
'line (about 1/8 or 3/16" (4 mm)) so they hang below the level of the tip of the centerboard when it's fully down and deployed. Do not use polypro line as it floats and would require small weights the entire length of the
line.
Run out as much tether line as you have room for, then put a weightlifting weight ( 10 lbs)
or mushroom type anchor on the end.
Then your student can sail out to the extent of the tether, but when they tack or jibe, the tether will not get wrapped in the centerboard and rear fin.
Hope this helps,

Starboard Rio query?

Hi all :>)
Just bought a brand new RIO, but when I got it home I noticed two small holes on the underside in the center of the board,
These machined holes are about 5mm diameter and an inch apart, they are also an inch deep.
what are they for?
should they have some kind of bungs in them?
Surely they must have an effect on performance.

Any help gratefully received.
