Stargazer Thanks guys for the input,
too bad for the US carbon I had my sights on .. a visit form a burglar, {luckily nothing got stolen because the alarm system did its work} hampered the plans a little and when I contacted the shop yesterday he told me it was sold ...
Mcross, I see your board is still for sale .. unfortunately I rather trade in my board or sell mine .. I have a potential customer but he's trying to sell his board as well to get mine .. and so the circle goes round :-)

So I really should go for the carbon version . Rdrsurf .. I'm glad you can use your 7.7 on it .. I have a gaastra vapor 7.6.

mcross19 Stargazer, I cannot fully answer your question as I have not tried the wood version of the Ultrasonic but the 0.6Kg difference makes a bigger difference than you think, probably the equivalent of you losing 5Kg!

I have however tried wood version of the isonic and futura (an other brands) and all I will say is they feel less crisp, softer i.e handles chop better but as the Ultrasonic will be used in nothing but flatwater then I would try to get a carbon model.

Us 147

Hi Philip,

the US carbon was my real favorite in 2012 and for sure will be for light wind conditions in 2013. Used it with NP Hellcat 7,7 and a 52 DRAKE and with NP H2 9,2 with the 58 DRAKE stockfin. With both sails it is a really amazing combo, easy to use, fast also in direct comparison to other more conventional large boards like 145 sharks or big futuras. Moreover the US has a much lighter and more sporty feel compared to the latter ones.

The best sensation of course is the planing capability in very very light winds and the capability to plane through lulls. This I valued particularly when sailing with 7,7 in changing conditions. All in all the US for me was a very good choice which might be even supplemented with a 10+ sail this year to even further lowering the hurdle to plane.

Don't expect big advantages from the slight change in shape of the 2013 model, so I would go for the 2012 US in carbon if you can get one.

Regards

Stargazer Hey, I just missed out on buying a US 2012 carbon in Holland .. he still has a wooden version for a good price .. wondering I would get that one ... I guess the .6 or something kg between the 2 versions won't make such a big difference for me as medium weight surfer.
There is another one second hand in England .. man these US boards are hard to get.
Does have anybody experience between wood and carbon?
Wood should be a smoother, stronger and impact resistant .. carbon stiffer and faster to respond. .. or is carbon really for the pro surfers. My futura 111 wood is an awesome board .. on the other hand I never surfed a starboard carbon .. but as it feels like my Ray LTD .. it's pretty stiff

I'd like to hear from you guys about this ... maybe it's worth waiting to buy an overyears board next year .. since the shape changed

BelSkorpio Personally, in marginal conditions, I'm not too much interested in speed but rahter in early planing.

But I reckon that the Ray could have a bit higher top speed.
A downwind slalom race with a few jibes around some buoys and I think the US147 will win again.
In figure-8 races or other races with some serious upwind racks, definitely the US.

Unregistered since the Ray is "only" 81 cm i anticipate the US will plane earlier
what i would like to know is speed - US vs Ray in 12 knots :-) once planing

Stargazer Dear RDRSurf,

I'd like to hear from your experiences with the US i'm on the verge on buying a 2012 CArbon model as well .. I currently HAve a futura 111 and a fanatic RAy 145 LTD .. I'm planning to trade in the Ray for a US . I weigh 75 kg that would be 80 kg with a suit I guess .. And I'm still wondering whether the US would give me a big advantage over the RAy regarding early planning and speed ..
how do you experience the biard ?

thanks

Philip
