RE: S-Type 93 2006

Alex, I look forward to hearing how you like the ST93 with smaller sails. I'm curious how the board rides for a lightweight (I'm 65kg) in 4.5m2 conditions.

RE: S-Type 93 2006

I've finally tryed it during Easter (short) holidays.
I got 4 good windsurfing days, 2 with Screamer + R_type 7.8 and 2 with S-type + Edge 6.0
Well, I'm really happy with the purchase!
In full powered conditions the ST93 is really a rocket, fast, easy to jibe, smooth on the chop.
I liked it!
Some minor problems with the tacks but as soon as you get the key they're solved.
I was a bit worried about the 28 cm fin but I had no problems with spin outs or such this things: it did its duty!
Thanks again for the advice

RE: S-Type 93 2006

HI Alex wind, I have the same board and use a 29 Select SL7 and select evo M 31cm. I found the fin it arrived with okay but not up to what the Slalom fins are like. I recieved this board last year and used it lot with the 6.5 sail and the 31 fin. I weigh 84kgs and didn't have any problems. It flew up wind on a choppy lake and was very smooth coming back down wind. You will love it. For my weigh I need to be powered on the 6.5 to get the most out of it. In the same winds I go a lot faster on the Stype 115. I haven't had the chance yet to give it a 30kt day try yet but Monday looks good. If so I'll let you know how it goes.

RE: S-Type 93 2006

What an interesting post... thanks!

I think I got the point Ian: ST is a blasting, fast board but still a freeride not a pure slalom.
Trying to turn it into a thing which it's not designed or ment to be would not be the right move.

Another topic here is usefull for getting infos about the ST93 fin: that one about fin change in 2007 S-types line, very helpfull.

Well, the only thing to do now is.. getting the ST93!

A little OT: I think this forum is a unique opportunity for customers to get more infos about products. Great work Starboard!

RE: S-Type 93 2006

Hi All,

Pretty much all the above info is correct, but please be aware the ST93 (ST's in general) can benefit in a lot of conditions from having a fin that is not toooo much a dedicated slalom design. Yes, fast and efficent are the go for ST, but running a slightly lower profile (lower AR) and more rake than most "race" fins around 30-34cm can (does) add to the "free-er" blasting character of the ST.

By design, ST (more especially ST93, the highest wind ST) concedes early planing and upwind to the iS, in return for easier ST top end range, especially downwing, thru chop and when powered. Race fins (thanks to their sheer efficency) will assist ST in early planing and upwind, and are a valid option - but throwing too much extra fin at ST (trying to make it back to an iS or equal / hard railed race board) is ultimately not so efficent - and often degrades the other end of the ST's performance range - plus the general "fun" factor (less technical, more moves).

This also takes into account the water conditions (higher winds/choppier B&J blasting mode, control conditions) the ST93 would be typically be used in, c/w (say) the larger ST's (lighter winds..and thus flatter water, more semi slalom type sailing)

I'm the totally race fin guy, but my ST93 fin preference is always "fast freeride".

Cheers ~ Ian

RE: S-Type 93 2006

Hi Alex,

While I'm not in a position from experience say what fin would be best with the 93 S-Type, I think it's hard to go wrong with Tectonics slalom fins. I would recommend checking out the Goldwings. I've got three of them, and they really rock.

RE: S-Type 93 2006

Thank you again for the feedbacks, I'm a more convinced now with the ST93.
And of course I think it'll also work with a smaller sail than my ICE 5.0, a good point for future..

Back to fin discussion, maybe I should also buy a 32 slalom fin. I use quite a lot the 6mt sail and early planing is a good target even if the gybing'd be a bit more difficoult.
Should I look for a particular model of fin?

RE: S-Type 93 2006

Hi Alex,

I'm your weight, and looking at a choice between the 93 and 104 S-Types, I have to agree with others above in thinking that the 93 would be best in combination with your Screamer. Also, if you decide at a later date to invest in a sail smaller than your 5.0, you would be better positioned to take advantage of the situation.

RE: S-Type 93 2006

With your weight the 28 will work very well with your 5 & 6m sails. Having said that a good 32cm slalom fin will help with early planing, reaching speed and pointing with you 6m sail, especially in the lower/mid end range of the sail, say 15-20 knots. I almost always use a 34cm slalom fin with a 6.5/79kg. I mostly use 2 fins for most sail sizes. this extends the range of the sail, without having to rig down. Its far easier to change a fin than rig up a new sail.
