RE: Kombat vs Freewave vs Acid

All considered it's the good choice, expecially if you already think about something smaller for the upper range in the future. I'd do the same. Before choosing my Evo, I have been thinking about a K86 for quite a while and in the end I didn't choose it just because the S95 overlaps quite a bit in high wind flat water conditions, so I went directly for a more dedicated wave board. But otherwise...

RE: Kombat vs Freewave vs Acid

Thanks for all the guidance

I think I'm going to go for the Kombat 87. It'll probably be a bit big when the wind picks up but it's not often all that windy here and my other board is a 133 so anything smaller than 87 would be quite a big gap.

Once I get good I'll have to look for something small!

Thanks again for the help

RE: do all board??

17 knots is plenty of power,

you want "chop, will jump well, plane reasonably early and be great on waves"
but remember no one board an do it all good great wave boards are not great planers they just cant be !!!
but you liked the kombat so i would say just go for it !! its an all arounder.
I like the Evo i have a 92 litre, slow but turny, with a 6.2 severne and at 195 lbs i get slaughtered during speed reaching by others ... but its is not mean to be speedy!
i think the acid would be very wave orientated , but they are small and combined with alot fo rcoker a schlogger for many unless its "nukin".
Whats your weight???
The 92 evo lets me get out in marginal winds when there are waves, with an acid i could not get out to the break.

RE: Kombat vs Freewave vs Acid

Hello,

I'm wondering why you want such big boards, at 72kg almost the same as me by 17 knots I am planing on my Freewave 78 or my PA74 and enjoying all the fun a smaller board gives you. I agree that the Freewave is very different to the Kombat, great fun if you are in a more aggressive mood but sometimes quite hard work on the body. The PA 74 and 80 are great bump and jump and blasting boards - I think better than the Kombat for high wind blasting. I really love my 2007 PA74, planes early with 5.3 and is so easy to sail fast with effortless gybes and feeling of precision control, I have also sailed the 2007 PA80. also great but I think too big for you in strong (25 knot) wind.

Good luck with your decision - there are no bad boards you mention only different ones!

RE: Kombat vs Freewave vs Acid

Kombat owner - thanks for the Freewave / Kombat comparison - very enlightening! For me the Kombat sounds like the better compromise vs the Freewave.

geo - thanks for the reply, I should have mentioned speed in my priorities though, also I heard that the Evo wasn't great through a chop.

That leaves me with Pure Acid vs Kombat. I imagine the Kombat would be better at flat water blasting and the Pure Acid would be better in waves. How would the two compare in chop / bump and jump? Which is faster and which is quicker onto the plane?

Thanks again!

Hi Tim,

you didn't mention speed among your priorities, so why not an Evo? At 74 kg. and in 17+ knots a 74/75 or 83/80 would easily fulfill your requirements 100% and probably be the easiest one.

RE: Kombat vs Freewave vs Acid

I own a 2006 Kombat 96 liters and have tried the Fanatic Freewave, they are almost two different boards. The Kombat is very smooth in the chop, the Fanatic is hard on the chop, the Kombat is a bit sticky getting on a plane, the Fanatic is super fast, Fanatic feels lighter, Kombat feels more in control, they are both turny...Kombat is super easy on the knees, Fanatic a bit harder...

Kombat vs Freewave vs Acid

I'm looking to get a second board and am having trouble deciding what would be best.

Background:
I weigh 72kgs
6'4"
Have a Carve 133 which I love in light/med winds and flat water
Comfortable waterstarting and blasting, carve gybes still a bit suspect
Recently tried a Kombat 97 in a F7-8 and loved it - so much smoother in the chop, more responsive, easier to jump etc. than my Carve. It's made me realise I need another board!

I'd like to use the board in 17kts+ both in flat/choppy water and I'm also really keen to get into wavesailing (Pagham / Wittering / Shoreham all likely spots + Cornwall occasionally)

I'm not interested in freestyle but really want a board that's smooth through the chop, will jump well, plane reasonably early and be great on waves.

I think the best boards would be either a Kombat 87, Fanatic Freewavee 86 or Pure Acid 86 but I have no idea how to choose between them!

Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks!!
Tim
