Severne Glide weight

Hi Roger,

Based on what I've read I'm thinking of getting a Severne Glide to go with my soon to be ordered Serenity. One of the reasons I'm using to justify a Glide purchase is lighter weight (relative to available power in a freeride sails). I've definitely read people say the Glide lighter than other sails. However, it occurs to me that I should really verify how much lighter it is before shelling out the $$$ since it is a pricey sail! So my question to you is do you know how much the Glide actually weighs vs a comparable sized sail like a Retro 7.5? Also, if the Glide actually produces power closer to a Retro 8.5 or 9.0, it would be interesting to know what those weigh.

Thanks for all your advice. You have helped me choose gear many times in the past and I'm always the better for it. Your input is very appreciated!

Hi Jay,
I'm frantically travelling back to Hatteras from Texas at the moment.
I will try to get a scale and weigh the Glide vs the Retro's this weekend.
Where are you located (i.e. which Jay is this...?)
Hope this helps,

Thanks, Roger, when you get a chance I would appreciate that.
I'm in the Seattle area (light wind mecca...).

Sorry, I forgot to ask one more important thing:

What masts have you used with the Glide?
Severne recommends their Redline 460 (their "highest spec'd mast").
Have you tried that vs any others? If the Redline is not available how well do you think the Glide would rig on another mast (ie, SW Speedstick or Lightstick)? I ask because if the Glide is really designed for the Redline curve and stiffness profile, I'm not sure how well it would work to rig this sail on a mast that doesn't capture the full potential of the sail's shape (ie, would it be a waste to spend so much for the sail and rig it on something less than the ideal mast).

Thanks again,

Jay

Hi Jay,
I'll have to check that out.
The board test sail I have came with a Severne RedLine 460 100% carbon mast (from Itallica by the look of it) and I've never used anything else.
So, I guess I'll also need to rig the Glide up on a Sailworks Light Stick
460 as well as a 460 Speedstick and a 460 Z-Speed.
My guess is that the Redline and the Lightstick are going to be about the same weight and bendwise. The Speedstick/Z-Speed are going to weigh a bit more, but the bends may be similar.
I'll let you know.

Thanks, Roger, you da man!

I'm wondering if the Redline 460 might be the same mast as the Lightstick 460 - both made by Italica? Do they have the same specs???

RE: Severne Glide weight

Hi Jay,
Unfortunately, I don't have the weight of the Glide as the USDOT impounded my truck and trailer on Friday nite, Saturday was spent getting the truck back and up to Lakes Bay (NJ).
Sunday was a very rainy and cold day, so you'll have to wait a couple of more days until I get to Worthington and can weigh the sail.
As far as the masts, I don't have a mast testing machine (yet), so I don't know for sure if the 460 Itallica masts are all the same, but I will check my Lightstick 460 againat the Redline 460 and see if they are at least similar.
Hope this helps,

Roger,

Sorry to hear about the truck impound.
Thanks for your help on the sail and mast when you get a chance.

Jay
