Alternative Fins for Gemini
Thinking about getting a Gemini to use in the Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks area for introducing friends and family to windsurfing. However, 70 cm fins don't run too well there as the sound is typically too shallow and/or too full of weeds.
So just wondering what other fin types and sizes are recommended for the Gemini, or have been used and work well, for sailing in shallow water areas or in weed conditions.
I've sailed the Gemini quite a bit in the Pamlico Sound.
I used a 40 cm Lessacher Design Formula Duo fin that really worked well with big sails
(8.5m2 Retro on the back, 7.5m2 Retro on the front) and small sails (4.8 Huckers front and back).
I also used a Tangent Dynamics Reaper 42 cm with good success.
Any good 40 cm or larger weed fin should work.
Hope this helps,
I just ordered my Gemini. Should arrive next week. Will be an interesting experience ...
Too many weeds for straight fins in the lakes I sail. I was planning to use my 56cm Curtis SomeWeed, which works great on my Start. Will that be too big on the Gemini? Should I go for a 40cm weed fin?
I'm planning to cartop the Gemini, because it's longer than my trailer (!). How should I protect the board? Is there a good bag?
If the Someweed 56 works good on your Start it will be fine on the Gemini.
If you have a rack on the top of your trailer, why not put the Gemini there.
If it hang over a little in the front and rear, than should not be a problem.
You can cartop it for sure. Just put some rack pads or foam insullation tubing with
carpet over then over your racks.
You might want to find some of the plastic edge protectors the truckers use under their cargo straps at the corners of the load. These (with a little padding under) should keep the rails of the Gemini in much better condition.
I do not know of any bags for the Gemini. Maybe a custom bag would be the best you
My Gemini came from Thailand by air with two wide bags over it. On on the front and one from the rear.
Some baggage handler/genius decided to put the Gemini and a couple of early Phantoms (one plain Phantom, one custom race version) on the bagge machines.
Svein missed his plane from LAX to Orlando because they had to take the baggage transport machine apart to extract the Gemmini which would not go around one of the corners.
Hope this helps,
Thanks, Roger. I didn't realize the straps would be bad for the rails. Thanks for the ideas.
Cute story about the baggage handling!
