Quad 86 or 81 for 83kg
I own a 2008 Pure Acid 86 wood which suits me great as an allround waveboard.
But the new Quad is very tempting and I consider changing for an 81 or an 86in wood carbon.
Which one should I go for as I plan to use the board in any wind and water state above 18 knots of wind.
With a width of 59 but a sharp pintail, I am very happy on the Acid from 4.0m to 6.0m sails.
Will the Quad 81 plane as early as the PA 86?
Experience of the Quad from similar weight users would be great.
Thanks in advance.
I'm to light... My guess is that 6.0 is a little bit of a stretch on the Q81 (maybe with a convertible with a 2+1 setup and something like a 17-20cm central fins would do the trick). ON the other hand the PA86 is just a smidgen wider and much narrower in the tail so if that one has served you well, probably a Q81 will too.
But I will ask Scotty to comment. He's your weight. It may take some time since he's competing in Reunion at the moment.
I see on test in Windsurf Magazine on frontpage of starboard website that Tiesa tell
"The Standard fins are 15cm at the front, but smaller riders may prefer 13cm or 11cm. The back fin can move forwards or backwards by 7 mm: this adjusts the drive and turning radius"
Could you tell me which front fins minimum size we can hope to put on the 81?
15 are standard on the Q76 and they are not only smaller but also a tad softer. A 13cm fin is now also available (might be good to push your distributor to order some as these fins were not ready to order at the time when the first orders for Quad boards were placed). I don't think the 11cm has materialized yet.
Personally (at 70kg) I've been happy both with 16+11, 15+12 and 15+11 which I have been running in the 66 to 81 liter Quads. Only in some super high wind (mean wind up to 47 knots) I felt more secure on my twin than on my Q66 with 15+11, maybe indicating a smaller setup would have been nice. In any normal conditions I've encountered the 15+11 have for sure been small enough. I think it will be more an issued about trimming the character of the board (de-power the turn a bit at the expense of maybe not as amazing upwind). But I haven't used the 13cm yet so I will be able to say more within a few weeks.
