Futura and Race Sails
Sail-range-for-sail-range the Futura boards have more volume than iSonic which is good for medium winds but not so good in higher winds; horses for courses. From what I see freerace sails work really well with Futura. Question is, can anyone comment about the up and down sides of using full cam race sails with slalom fins on the latest Futura boards. Thanks.

I guess then the answer is nope. iSonic is the go.

Hi Philip,

No problems to use full race sails on the Futura but if you are looking for ultimate Slalom performances better to use iSonic.

By the way Futura can go extremely fast :)

All the best

Thank you Remi. That is most useful to know.

I have both the Futura 93 & 133 and often use them my race sails. I also have the Isonic 101. The Furtura’s are fine with race sails and race/slalom fins. But, as Remi said, if you are looking for absolute performance then the Isonic is the way to go.

For general freeriding I would recommend the Futura because it is more comfortable. Slalom races are run in heats so you are only sailing for about 10 minutes at a time where as with freeriding you can be sailing for much greater lengths. Some of my sessions are for 2 hours before taking a break and in choppy water it is much easier with the Futura. Also if you are mixing in any tricks like carve 360’s or helly tacks then the Futrua will shine over the Isonic.

Thank you Coachg. Very interesting and timely advice. Just opened the message having been away snow skiing - it is near the end of the Aussie season. You are right it is about trading off the blasting excitement of the iSonic v. versatile sessions - difficult choice as both designs are so attractive. This ski season I put aside my slalom piste carvers to concentrate on all mountain skiing and really liked the endurance and versatility even though I have nominally (because I am 'advanced' not 'expert') given away some top speed and lost some of the locked in feeling. So I am thinking the same with WS and the Futura.

I understand totally I also have a mix of Isonic and Futura and for me its down to where you sail eg versatility/water conditions/control/speed/fitness/ability and resale...........

In the higher winds and confused water state the futura does it for me........

Check out the news section about Kevin testing Futura's and speeds he was getting.

Us done here in OZ have been getting mid 30 konts for last year or so on Futura's. I beleive I guy here on the first gen Futura 122 got a 40 knot at the PiT.

Futura are fast and fun to ride.

Really impressive well rounded design.

Two remarks:
- I think high wind control will be better with a Futura despite some more volume
- Ultimate slalom perfomance is something you should want and be capable to get out of yourself and your board.

I decided to go for Futura wood 93 and 122 '11 with the reflex 6.2, 7.0 and 7.8 together with select slalomfins. After three sessions: 14-35 Kts using both boards and all sails my first conclusions compared to slalomboard I used before:

- passive planing is better
- easier jibing
- bigger windrange (low wind planing and high wind control)
- the Futura's really like slalomsails. 7.8 reflex with the Futura 122 works great! Also the 7.0 is nice.
- Futura 93 is very good in high winds. With the 6.2 reflex it feeled very confident sailing half wind in gusts up to 35 Kts. I could get topspeeds 37-38 Kts out of this board while I'm just a recreational speedsurfer.

I'm no pro and just speeding around with a GPS, but this kind of boards will make surfing days both longer and more enjoyable for a lot of surfers who like to go fast. I'm very happy that I took the deciscion and I didn't loose a single Kts speed;-)
