NEED INPUT FROM INSTRUCTORS, TEAM RIDERS, STARBOARD TEAM, TESTERS...
I want to develop two windsurfing schools in two places of light wind.
Say, most of the time wind is about 5-8 nudos and in the peak of the day it comes to 10 knots (some days only) for about an hour.
Yes, I am an advanced Formula racer and can plane in 9-10 knots with my 11.0, but I guess most people wont do it. I have a friend with intermediate level in Formula and he gets tired of pumping with his 11.0 to be planning just in the gusts.
So, I will have there an school with Start boards and sails. Then people learn....what to promote there:
Cons and pros Apollo
Apollo can be really good choice, but to go with the most expensive board in the line for begginers and intermediate level could kill the sport and the roots. By the other side...its fast and looks cool in light wind.
Cons and pros Hybrids
Are they too much race oriented? maybe too complicated boards or too much race oriented for a place were no windsurfers exist...any way...they may plane earlier than the Phantoms due to the width? Allow bigger sails too...
Cons and pros Phantoms
As no racing will take place yet in this places maybe Phantom 300 or Phantom 320 can be the choice. They look, at least the 320 suitable for intermediate sailors, allow a 9.5 sail, yet enough for recreative sailing. But...my cons is that I have not tested it and I guess at their weight they will need lots of wind to get planning so people in those 10-12 knots wont be planning so maybe they wont discover the exciting part of the sport. Would it be fun to sail 6 knots with it by the other side...enough fun to convince someone to continue windsurfing.
Cons and pros serenity
This concept really likes me a lot, fast in almost no wind. I guess this board covers what all the other ones cannot do. But...would it be unstable for intermediate sailors...also, difficult to carry and scary to store? The performance really good, but i am a bit afraid that intermediate sailors suffer to uphaul the sail and avoid catapults.
Please, tell me from your experience what do choose as a strategy for this place!!!
Any instructor, tester, professional or school owner can give some input here and maybe this can help all to decide what to do in those light wind "new spots".
