Default Serenity 2009 vs Phantom 380 - 7-14knt windspeeds

With SUPing now giving light wind TOW, what would be most suited to the 7-14 knot range - new Serenity vs Phantom?

I'm 100kgs and sailing 25 years, looking for something for light-medium wind range for freesailing (not racing).

The bay where I sail can also get a little shallow so I would be looking to the 40cm 'dagger' on the Serenity - would that affect its overall performance, max sail size, or just upwind performance?

Also have the *board 12'2'' SUP, how would these two compare in that wind range.

Thanks

Hi Waterloo,

The overall performances will be less for sure. The 40cm is for less deep water.

What kind of sail you suppose to use on this boards?

All the best

Remi,

I would be looking for 50cm max fin depth.

At the moment I use a 9.0m HSM Super Freak for these types of windspeeds but would look to also include a 9.5m longboard style sail with bottom end power.

I understand that an Apollo or formula would probably be best choice in this situation but fin size would be prohibitive.

A phantom 320 would also be a possibility as the kids could then also have a board with a dagger to encourage their sailing technique - but I doubt I would get it planning in 7-14 knots at 100kg.

Cheers

Hi Waterloo,

You have a problem of deef in your place?

The Serenity with a 9,5 Race-Board sail are extremely fast in 2 to 10 knots and even faster with a Overdirve 11mē.

All the best

waterloo,

The Drake Shallow 40 cm fin of the Serenity is absolutely fine with a Code Red 11m2 sail. The only drawback I've noticed so far is that you will loose more and more degrees in upwind pointing angle with less and less wind as compared to the Drake XXL 70 cm fin.

Since you will be mostly targeting the medium- to high-wind range of the Serenity (7-14 knots wind), using the 40 cm wide and shallow fin should be no problems to your goals IMHO, even with a 9.5 m2 sail. In the upper wind range (10-14 knots wind), you can switch from the wide and shallow Drake 40 cm fin to a classic upright and narrow racing 40 cm or shorter fin (i.e., much less foil surface area).

Cheers !

JM
