2009 Sailing Statistics

Mario,

Garmin Foretrex 201. It has worked great but is not state of the art. I hear that the Locosys GT 31 is the way to go, but I haven't got into Speedsurfing.com or have I downloaded any of the data off my GPS. Someday I will have to upgrade.

I keep it in an Aquapac small arm band case. The Garmin's are suppose to be water proof/resistant, but I decided that I would not take the chance. I read some reports of them leaking after hard crashes.

Interesting stats that add more perspective to windsurfing, especially for those (me) who are having more short term memory loss.

Used a Garmin Legend GPS for 375 consecutive days (5/2004-12/2006) to log 13186 miles. Always felt that time on the water was a better measure than speed, other GPS milestones follow:

133 miles- longest single day
36.1 mph- highest peak speed
<25 mph- 5.9% 26-30 mph- 50.8% 31-34 mph- 41.7% >35 mph- 1.6%
4468 miles- highest annual total
721 miles- highest monthly total (5/2006)
34.9 miles/day- average daily miles

2009 was the most annual days (163) sailed (447 hours), the data is based on a 150# with gear limited to 4.2-6.0 sails and mostly a single 90-95 L board. Primary milestones in 2009 were:

June- most consecutive days sailed at 15
July- first time to sail 21 days in a month
9 months were double digit days and 8 months were either the best or second best since 2001

Overall this data shows the summer (May-August) each year tends to be the best sailing for number of days, distance and speed with saunta-like air and water conditions. Sail usage for 1064 logged days: 4.2- 1.8% 4.7/4.8- 23.1% 5.3/5.4- 28.1% 5.8-6.0- 44.4% 6.2- 2.6%

Amazing stats, interesting windlog and web page. However, you sail/live in one of the best windsurfing locations in the world. There probably aren't many out there that haven't heard of Corpus Christi, Texas and Bird Island Basin. For those that haven't, BIB is on a barrier island along the Texas coast about 20 miles south of of Corpus Christi. The prevailing winds are from the south or southeast and flow over the very flat Padre Island and then across a very large bay with shallow water. The wind tends to be side off shore as I recall except when cold fronts blow in from the north in the spring, fall and winter. If you check out Murphy's windlog, you can see that there aren't many days when you will get skunked.

It's almost always windy and it's great for year round flat water blasting, plus it's also great for learning since you can stand up for miles across the bay (1m deep).

If I had the opportunity to sail as much as Murphy, I would likely be divorced.

My 2009 statistics: 94 sessions, 66% on Mistral Equipe, 15% on Starboard Formula (X-186), 4% on slalom, 11% on landsailor, 4% on snow or ice with modified toboggan.

In 2009 I raced in 10 events, in 7 states, FL, WI, IA, OH, MN, MI, & NE. 6 of the events were in the USWA NRT Open class, using the Equipe.

I'm 66, 2009 was my 26th season. December was my 190th month in a row sailing with a windsurfing rig in Iowa (I count landsailing and snow or ice sailing).

Hi Del Carpenter

I´m very glad looking at your sailing statistics and watching that even when you are past the 40 year old barrier you keep on windsurfing.

I started to windsurf when i was 38, 2 years ago, and regret i didnt start it early because i see the years go by and maybe i wont be able to do all i want starting so late.....but your post and Kens give me the hope....i wish when i get to 60 i still have all your energy.

Interesting exercise. Before checking i would have thought my most used sail was the Ka5.8 ..wrong and i didn,t get the board right either.This is 2 years of data,the 6.6 has only being in the kit for a year

Nice windsurfing log and I have to agree with Ken, Murphy is in one of the most consistant and windiest places to sail in the US year round that is for sure. I spent nine years in Corpus Christi back in the hay day of windsurfing 1981 to 1985 and then from 1996 to 2001 stationed @ the US Coast Guard Air Station. It's a fun place to windsurf and have spent alot of time at BIB and Port Aransas and CC bay for some wave and B&J conditions.
I think I'll start a log and see what I use the most. Take it easy, Warm winds Michael

Hi Mario,
There is no age 40 barrier. Per Wikipedia, Jim Drake was about 38 when he invented the universal joint in 1967, and he is still windsurfing at about age 80. As an ordinary person, I was 41 when I took my first windsurfing lesson in 1984.

Ken, thanks for the feedback and great PR for Bird Island Basin. With all the toys you and the other posters have it would indeed be difficult to get skunked at BIB. Fortunately my wife of 38 years understands and has made it possible for lots of time on the water but unfortunately she is unable to enjoy much of it. Have to keep resisting bigger gear because of a limited allowance and to stay married.

Also thanks to Mike T for the PR for Bird Island Basin, glad to know you had the opportunity to sail in the Corpus Christi area.

For those who have been here before, come on back and for those who have not been here, come on down to the worst kept secret on the Third Coast. There are only a dozen or so locals that sail BIB regularly but there are hundreds of regular visitors each year and plenty of room for more.
