Early planing board -- question for Remi

Remi,

Last year I rented a Futura 122 and was thinking of getting that board or a 111. However, after a summer of relatively light winds I have decided that I want to go bigger (my current board is Bic Techno 133) so that I can plane in 11 to 15 knots.

I was thinking about the Futura 141 or one of the larger Isonics and then Starboard made my choice even tougher by coming out with bigger Carves and the Ultra Sonic.

I weigh 70 kg, and have sails ranging from 4.8 to 8.5 (and have a mast and boom that would handle sails up to 10.0 or so).

I guess I'm leaning toward the Futura because the shapes on the Sonics appear to make them fairly one dimensional but I'd be interested in your thoughts. More specifically, how big a difference is there between the Futura 141 and the ISonic 137 in early planing on one hand and in jibing on the other? Should I be looking at the Carve 151 or the Ultra Sonic instead?

I believe that already the F122 will sail bigger than the Bic 133. If you intend to use sails down to 4.8 on your new board, then I don't think you should go any bigger, especially with 70 kg and a 8.5 as your biggest sail.

You will bump into the law of diminishing returns.

If you want more low end power I do think that F133 would be pretty big already. Its sail sweet spot should be close to your 8.5, and it will start to feel quite big already with a 7.0.

Hi Jon

Did you use 4.8 on the Bic?

Do you want a board who fit 4.8 to 8.5?

At 70 kgs you don't need so bigger board with 8.5, Futura 122 should give you what you are intend for 11 to 15 knots but also more wind but 4.8 will very uncomfortable on it, but 6.5 will be perfect also.

I'm not looking to match my sails so much as match conditions. I want a board which will plane easily in 11 to 15 knots with a larger sail. Sometimes I can pump my techno onto a plane in these conditions but it is a lot of work and not very consistent. On the other hand, I'd like a board that jibes fairly easily, that's why I'm a little wary of the iSonics.

What sort of conditions could I expect to plane in with the Futura 141 and the iSonic 137?

Hi Jon,

I am 95kg and have a Futura 133 2010. I use a North Ram 9 on it in light winds from 11 to 20 kts and te board plane very easily. For your weight a F122 will be more then enough.

Look like you,( may be I wrong) want to buy a board for really light winds condition and even may be get a sail like 9.7?
If it's this case in the Futura range the better option to use with 8.5 & 9.7 will be the Futura 141
In the Carve range, the 151
iSonic range the 127 and the Ultra Sonic 147, this 2 boards need to be use with minimum cambers sails like free race sails to get the maximum of them. Planing will be around 9 / 8 knots.

If not and you want to use 8.5 & smaller at this time the Futura 122 will be enough and you will plane depend of your skill around 11 knots.

If you intend to use sails down to 4.8 on your new board, then I don't think you should go any bigger, especially with 70 kg and a 8.5 as your biggest sail. You will bump into the law of diminishing returns. If you want more low end power I do think that F133 would be pretty big already. Its sail sweet spot should be close to your 8.5, and it will start to feel quite big already with a 7.0. My two cents ...
