Default Phantom 295 vs 320

Am considering a Phantom 320 or 295 as a light wind cruiser and occasional raceboard to complement my slalom gear.

Am leaning towards a 320, but am still undecided. Any thoughts? I'm a lightweight - 63kg.

Thanks

my guess is the 295
for me at 100 kilos 320 is suggested - or 377
believe your weight is right on the mark for the 295 !!

I have sailed both in competition and in various conditions.
The 320 is far superior in upwind speed and angle, particularly in light winds.
I think that is because of the longer water line length, much bigger centre board and extra buoyancy.
The 295 is a little easier to turn because of the shorter length and perhaps a little bit more fun when planing.
For light wind performance and general racing racing pedigree, the 320 is way ahead.
The 295 is a good youth board and great if you are racing in a one design fleet.
Since you have a short board for high wind fun, I would go for the 320.

Hi Rww,

For 2014 we made a new Phantom 295 L who have 30 liters more than the version that try Tony with bigger dagger board and fin. Due to the length of the 320 she still have an advantage but very small now while in planing condition the 295 is faster and way more fun. On top of that you can go up wind with out dagger board over 15 knots but absolutely can't with the 320.
This board and me will be in Martigues for the French Championship from 17 august this year.

Also you are only 63 kgs and you will be much more comfortable in a wide wind range compare to the 320. For guys over 80/85 the 320 is the better choice.

Hope this help.

All the best

If I decide on the 295L, what sail size would you recommend.

Thanks Russell

Hi Rww,

The Race Board sail who is deliver with the Phantom 295 L is very light and powerful and will make you flying on the rail up wind and with a very quick planing. So that will be your machine for lighter winds until 15 knots with out problems. Remember that this sail need an adjustable out haul system to get the best of it particularly when the wind is over 15, thanks

Thanks Remi

Is there still a choice of sail size - 7.5 or 8.5? If so, which would you recommend for me at 63kg?

Hi Row
Row
It's just depend what condition you are looking for, the wider wind range or the best ligth wind performances.
Anyway the 7.5 have already a huge power compare to slalom sail and very ligth, so I guess this will be the best option for you
hope this help
all the best
