Default iS 107 or iS 110 for me?

Hi Remi

Congrats for a great line up this year but I have to say this 107 vs 110 choice is now more confusing than ever. I am 70kg and want a board which I will use only with a 7.8 NP Racing sail (11-18 knots on flat to choppy water). I already have a 2013 iSonic 97 as my main board for my NP 7.0 & 6.4 racing sails. And I know your recommendation will be the 110 for me but the 75cm width scares me somewhat and I think at 16-18 knots I will get bounced around a lot. To be honest I think an RRD 114 (70cm width but with extra volume) would be the perfect board for me (and correct me if I'm wrong but the extra volume over the iS 110 would make it plane pretty much the same and at 70cm wide I would have more control). But I have been a Starboard man for 7 years now and I'm a bit addicted to the brand. What do you say?

The width of the board makes you plane early, not the volume. I'm 84kg and use 7.9 on my 2011 isonic 97. At 70kg i see no reason not to use the 7.8 on your 97, If you want more lightwind performance i would get a 110 or 117w with your 7.8. Just got a 110 myself and it feels small compared to my 127!

Hi Van, forgot about the width and go for the 110. Pretty easy decision really. The 97 and 110 will be a great combo and great range. Good luck.

Hi Kapten k. I think I don't agree with you buddy. You mean to tell me that if 2 guys weighing lets say 80 kg each and both on the same sail size say 7.8 one is on a 110 lts 75cm width and the other is on a 130 lts 70cm width. You think the guy on the 100 ltr board is going to plane earlier?? Cause I don't.

and kapten k even think about this. 2 identical boards both width 75cm but one 120 ltr the other 110 ltr which one you think would plane earliest everything else as per my previous post. According to your post both boards will plane at the same time to which I don't agree.

Hi Van

107 is to close to 97, so your better choice for your 7.8 for ligth wind condition will the 110. This board is specially dedicate for your group weight for ligth winds performances.
About volume: it helps only when the board is not planing to not sink and also volume is the enemy of control. The reason why our iSonic a wider, shorter and slimmer to get the wide wind range as possible.
Volume can help to get early planning but extra Widft a lot more. Extra volume help but extremely minimal the reason why is because the water remember the Widft and not the volume to get planing.
Remember the Sonic 110 bit was only 63cm wide compare to today same vilume but 75 wide, the difference in planing performances is Massive

I am 72 kg and have the 2013 iSonic 110. I sail it with a Simmer SCR 7.8 in flatt water and chopp form 10 to 18 knots of wind. I have no problems with the width. The board is superb for my weight. Normally I use a 41cm z-fin but if the wind is in the upper range and I want to go for GPS top speeds I use a 38cm. If I am tired and the wind is ok I can also use the 38 for more comfort.

My next board is a 92/63cm wide freestyle and a 18cm fin. With my 5.2 I have the perfect board to go to from the 110 in 16-18 knots. Sometimes in those conditions I can have both set ups on the beach and change between them and both work brilliantly.

Many thanks for your input.

Remi of course I hear what you are saying but I see this year you increased the widths of all the iSonics but you decreased the tail width. Why is that? If I had to guess I would say that once the board is already planning with a decrease in tail width it's quicker and easier to turn but doesn't tail width help in early planning and of course it helps when going through the lulls. So what was the reasoning behind the decrease in the tail widths if you can say? Many tks.

When you compare like that, you often compare to an old board that has a much longer waterline, and it might plane earlier but will be slower when planing.

If you know how to pump your sail there wont be any difference in planing, and you will lose control sooner with the 120l board.


I can compare my
vivace carbon from -97 53x279 96litre
manta 54 2008 54x234 74litre
isonic carbon 2011 63x234 97litre
all boards has the same weight! (5.7kg) and the vivace planes sooner than the manta , but is a lot slower to accellerate in a gust! The isonic blows the other out of the water and is faster on all points of sail, except in +30knots of wind where i have more control on a 74litre board.

My examples were a bit exaggerated of course to make a point and I was thinking along the lines of situations when one is on the verge of planning or not planning, again an exaggerated condition which of course very few of us sail in such conditions as what's the point. Of course once planning it goes without saying that all the new boards will blow the older boards out of the water. But I see you point kapten k.
