Hmmmmmmm who the heck wants to do slalom in <10 knots? It's just abysmal...

What would be really cool is a return to the course racing days; keep the format 6/3 and sailors can choose to register a formula board as their lightwind board and we do upwind course racing in light winds. All the legends grew up with course racing and are still good at it - Finian, Micah, Benny, Jimmy, Steve, Gonz, Arnon, Ross, Antoine etc etc so I don't see it as a disadvantage to anyone. Could even let the sailors choose what sails they want to register (maybe 2 formula sails + 4 slalom, or 1 formula sail + 5 slalom; make the sail choice for the year really interesting).

I couldn't think of anything worse than having to compete against the big guys on 95cm slalom boards where I will take the 80cm because I'm 80kg and I won't hang on to a 95cm if it gets windy then at the same time go and throw any 85cm board ever made in to the TRASH because they don't have resale value anymore as we invent (yet another) board width class...arghh.

All this being said I wonder if he have a few windy events in a row, Fuerte/Turkey/Sylt/La Torche/New Caledonia then everyone will have totally forgotten this whole conversation ........... ?

Hi Sean
That will be nice to have Formula come back but look it will way more difficult to get it due to riders first (except those who do Formula already who is very small, none of the other want this happen) and second due to their is a class already for Formula. But nothing is impossible.
Have fun in Fierte and for this time WIND will be there!

Sean, with respect, slalom in less than 10 knots may be boring for you, but I don't think that the general state of windsurfing/PWA is in a position to cherry pick events so that slalom can always be sailed in strong winds.
You bring a good point about course racing, its where it all started. In lighter winds, "big slalom boards" can race up and down wind. Formula has developed to an extreme of this discipline, but no reason why an upwind/slalom down wind cant be raced on max 95 wide boards. Regulations could limit sail size to 10m as it is now, max width and if necessary tail width to keep the boards related to current slalom boards.
1 course board, 2 slalom boards with discipline being decided on wind conditions(including consistency of the wind) course adjusted tighter for lighter wind days
The light wind issues will never go away until something is done about it, PWA needs events that can be run successfully in 8 knots and above

The most important thing is to make windsurfing as accessible as possible, which to me means having the smallest number of boards and sails, with the widest wind range possible.

In the past, the rule of thumb is that boards should be about 13cm appart (eg 85cm, 72cm and 59cm) If designers can extend that range to 17cm, so that you have a 92cm, 75cm and 58cm, that covers all winds from 10kts to 45kts then that would be a massive benefit to the windsurfing world

Let's consider conditions in the UK this summer, glorious sunshine, nice and hot, winds around 10 to 12kts at best. There is often not enough for me to use my Is137, but I may be able to get going on a 90+cm board. However, I want to use my big board with my 8.6 as well (which is crossover size with my 75cm board) - so can clever board designers create a 92cm board, which will work well in gusty 12 to 16 kts with an 8.6 and be as competetive as one of today's 85cm boards?

Also worth considering high wind boards. At Weymouth Slalom in May, the winds reached 45kts. I sailed both my Is101 and Is87 - only in the very extreme races, when I was totally overpowered on my 5.7 was the Is87 the best board, by the time I was on a 6.4, I was quicker round the course on the Is101. So my point here is that at the small end of the scale, a 60cm wide 90 - 95L board is probably the smallest you need for 95% of races

Hi Matt, they already have its called the US147, I sail it regulary with an 8.6, unless it is really choppy it wont be too comfortable but it can be done, as soon as you are always powered on the 8.6 you can pop it on your is110 like I do.

I was trying to make some of the points that Sean made earlier, it could and will become a heavy sailor only competition and do competitiors really want the hassle of lugging around a formula board and 12m sails, trying to get them on aircraft, I had trouble just taking an 8.6 abroad once!

At the end of the day it is up to the current crop of sailors to vote on this which may be sooner if there are any more light wind events!

I would seriously consider a US147 in preference to my Is137, however, I would want to be sure that I was alowed to race it

I looked at the Is127 and Is137, ultimately going for the 137 because those few cm extra length make it much more pleasant in marginal conditions.

I had 28.3kts on it with my 9.6 the other day, when I changed down to the 7.8 on my Is110 all I could manage was 27.1kts, only changed down as broke the mast on 9.6, I am not really sure what the 137 gives away to the 127. It would have been nice to see what a US147 could do in those conditions, which are cross over from the 137 to 110

When you think about it, it is really incredible what these "big" boards can do - sustaining 28kts in 15kts wind with massive sails. Maxed out on my IS87 with 5.7 on flatish water in Portland Harbour, I am only doing 37kts peak, but over 500m only 33 or 34 kts

Hi Matt, as I have said before you are welcome to try my US next time we are both at Portland, I tend to sail from Ferrybridge, am guessing that you have a trailer at the OTC?

Mark, I want to come and try Kirby one weekend but would only probably come up on a windyish forecast so probably no good for you to try it but you would also be welcome if you are willing to travel down south when the forecast looks naff up north.

Thanks Martin, if I'm down your way I'd love to have a few runs on the US147

You defo need to try WK some time, but best on a 30k plus westerly day if you want to see 40k plus on the dial. A few of your local guys make the trip up on a regular basis

Mark, I don't actually live anywhere near Portland but I like to sail there so try to get down when the forecast looks good. I take it you may be down there for speed week? If so that is a definite possibility.
