Default Severne Convert 8.5 or Fórmula One Design 8,5

Hello, i am a girl using wideboard and i am looking for the best sail for me.
I want an 8.5. My goal is freeride, sail away in a reach and come back.
I want to have The most fun and not looking for a sail to compete. My idea is to use this sail in light Wind days.
What sail is better for me between Severne Convert 8.5 and Severne Fórmula One Design 8.5? Please explain me why,
Cheers!
Lizzy

Hi Lizzy,

What board you want to use it with and how many Kgs you are to propose you the best option?

All the best

Default Board used

Hello Remi,
i have a Formula Experience 160 liter board, but i am not looking to compete, just to have fun out there in light wind days, as for hi wind days i have a smaller sail for that board. My sailing is more going into a reach, tack and get back to the beach. I weight aprox 65 kgs. I sail mostly in very flat water (type like a lagoon of salt water) and stable winds. I have experience sailing with cambered sails but some people recommend me to go to non-cambered Convert sail to fit more my free rider style, rig easier, lesser weight, more fun. And some people told me that i need cambers as if not in the lulls of light wind (10-15 knots) a free ride sail won't work for me very good so i need cambers to feel more stable sail when sailing. In case this choice, they recommend me the Formula Experience One Design 8.5 instead as this is the other 8.5 in stock in the local shop.

So, between this two choices Convert vs FE OD, i am not sure which one to choose for me...
thanks for your help!
Lizzy

Hi Lizzy, if you have sailed cambered sails before and don't mind using them the formula experience will work better in lower wind speeds to get you planning earlier and they will keep you going through the lulls but will be heavier, less fun when not planning, a lot harder to rig and not so fun when turning round. A no cam sail will be a lot lighter and easier to rig and turn. At your weight I don't think you will see much gain over a slightly smaller rig i.e. a 7.5m

If you want to go the cam route then try to source a twin cam, much more user friendly!

Lizzy,

For pure freeriding on a Formula Experience board, I would pick right away a no-cam NCX 8.0 or 9.0 m2 sail. It's very light, it's very fast and still very much in control when overpowered. A 105 kg friend of mine is using both sizes on his Ultrasonic board with great fun and ease of use.

Since I weight 65 kg as you do, you will have no problem to start and sustain the planing as of 10 knots of wind with an 8.0 m2 sail and 8-9 knots with the 9.0 m2 sail. You will start the planing perhaps a tad earlier and point better upwind and downwind with a cambered sail like the Formula Experience OD 8.5 m2, but for pure freeriding without competing at a high level, you don't need that high degree of performance IMHO.

Hope you have a smaller fin to match your smaller sail in higher wind on such a wide board.

Cheers !

betweek convert and FE OD, i'd pick OD, convert it too entry level /unstable for formula I would guess, NCX could be a better option if no cam
