Default Which 2 iSonic boards with 3 sails for 100kg

Hi Starboad Team,

I want to buy a complete new equipement setup.
Can anyone give me some advice, if the combo I think about makes sense?

I am 192cm tall and my weight is about 100 kg.

Most of the time I windsurf on lakes like Lake Garda.

I want to handle windspeeds from 4 to 7 bft, that means from 10 to 32 knots.

I would like to reduce my gear to 2 boards and 3 sails, if possible.

Boards and sails should be slalom/race.

Here are my thoughts about the setting:

1. isonic 117 carbon 2011 with 7 and 8,6 rs:racing or similar
2. isonic 147 carobn 2011 with 8,6 and 10,7 rs:racing or similar.

Does this make sense?

Or do I better chose a formula board for the big sail?

Thanks for your help!
Markus

Hi Surfmax!

This is an interesting question. I have ordered an ultrasonic 147(I am 90 kg) and a severne turbo 9.2 , and I am really wandering how much wind and chop this 147liter/93 cm board will take.
I will give you my opinion as soon as I have given it a try.
I have a kode 112 with an 8.0 severne ncx as my next sail. Maybe I need a smaller slalom board in between... like an isonic 107/117 ?

Not *board team, but here is what I think (I've sailed several iSonics and have 3 mates who are around 95 kg - all freshwater iS sailors).
If you go for 2 slaloms, you can go smaller, especially for the smaller board. iS117 (75wide) is not going to be any fun in Force 7, no matter how heavy are you. You should look at the 107 and even 97 models depending on how steady is the wind. You'll have no problem with 97 in steady force 6. From my experience (and my heavyweight mates'), iS137w85 is big enough for all lightwind duties, but I haven't sailed a slalom as wide as iS147w93 so I can't comment. And I'm not sure iS137 can carry a 10.7. If you have a lot of 10kt days you'll be better off with a Formula anyway.
So you need to estimate your wind conditions realistically and go from there.

Hi Markus

First question will be : Are you going to race under slalom riles
If yes you can't go over 85 cm wide
At this time I recommend you the iSonic 137
If you don't care about this and would to have the best board as possible for your 10.7 foreaching that will be the Ultra Sonic 147
For the smaller board the 107 will be better for the 7 than the 117
8.6 still very good on the 107 & the 147
Hope this
All the best

Hallo Markus!
Like Remi told, no races, than go for big sails in 10knts wind to Formula!
If you like to compete I reco you for light winds iS137 with Severne Reflex II 9,7
Than go for iS117Wide with Reflex II 8,6 and 7,8
30knts in choppy water are not any problem with that combo (177W&7,8)!
If you go Sylt,....waves...32knts constant take the iS107 & Reflex II 8,6 and 7,0.
The 8,6 sizes both boards!
Hope it helps!

Thanks a lot for all the answers! They were very helpfull...

My conclusion "on the paper" so far is:

4bft -> 137 with 9,7 Relfex II or 10,0 RS:Racing Evo III, 54 cm fin
5bft -> 137 with 8,6 Reflex II or RS Evo III, 48 cm fin
6bft -> 107 with 8,6 Relfex II or RS Evo III, 44 cm fin
7bft -> 107 with 7,0 Reflex II or RS Evo III, 38 cm fin

Of course the setup may slightly vary due to how constant the wind is and how big/choppy the waves are.

With this setup I can still think about adding low wind range by entering the formula scene with corresponding board and 12 m2 sail using also the 9,7/10 sail, and adding high wind range by buying an isonic 90 or even an iSonic Speed W58.
Maybe I will even diversify inbetween, if I get keen on hitting the Slalom competition scene :-) But all this is future and "evolution"...

I still have two more question:

1. Is there a noticeable difference between the two sail brands mentioned above (Severne Reflex II and Neilpryde RS:Racing Evo III)?
2. What is the difference between the Reflex Slalom 9.6 and the Reflex Formula 9.7? Which one do you recommend for the iSonic 137?

Further comments are very welcome!

Thanks and cheers,

Markus

9.7 is the better one as it was developed off the 9.6 making one more cam together with touch longer boom to make the 9.7 which after out performed the 9.6 even for slalom. 9.6 was still good and we were surprised the 9.7 was better even for slalom and is my choose.
