hello:
lost the mastbase plate from my spare - from my winter sailboards back in the day, i remember people saying one could use the AOL CDs :-) so, is this plate necessary and if so, does an old CD/DVD do the job? many tanx http://joewindsurfer.blogspot.com

Good morning, Joe,
The plate is there to stop scuffing of the board deck, as you twist/tighten the mast base. Even on the picture you supplied, you can see scuffing where the base has tightened. Have never tried the CD thing. To my mind, at least two disadvantages are apparent: - if the top of the board is not perfectly flat either side of the mast track, the CD may curve and break. - If it does break whilst you are on the water, sharp CD pieces could cut your feet. Better to get the correct scuff plate, I think. Hope this helps. |

on Australian forum got some good suggestions - cut from old car rubber mat, or some plastic containers... and streamline is supposed to sell replacements
btw - a plastic coffee can lid is just the right size - will try that one ...

I think I saw one in the used bin at 30noeuds this morning, otherwise they have a pile of new replacement ones.

joe_windsurfer,
I restarted last August, after a 25 year break, with the same antique gear. (Sailboard Vario) The restart was in Hatteras, and I sailed afterwards a few time in Baie d'Urfée, once in Cartier, once at AAO and once at Oka. I bought an Ezzy kid rig in Hatteras and the kids loved it. I'm doing my best to get a few members of the family in the sport to ensure that I will be able to go myself too!! Since August, I was given a few sails and bought mostly used equipment so we now have a close to complete family kit. If all turns well, we'll meet on the water this summer! |
