Hi,
This must be an extremely common question but I am thinking about getting a starter kit so that I can get back into windsurfing. I have done a bit previously and used to be quite a keen sailor so I understand the principles etc... In saying this I am hoping that I will pick it up again quite quickly. As such, if I am going to spend a reasonable amount on new kit, I want to get something that maybe stretches me more initially but gives me the room to develop without having to upgrade kit quickly. (If that makes sense?) First off, I have dislocated my shoulder twice before and had surgery to stabilise it. Its much stronger now and I've been in the gym etc with no realy problems. Does windsurfing put particular strain on the shoulder or should I not be too worried about it? I understand I will have greater chance of further injury but I don't want to be unable to do things forever as I'm only 23. I'd appreciate your opinion. I am 6ft3 and weigh about 80kilos. Could you recommend a set up that would give me a starting point to look at? I appreciate any advice you may be able to offer. All the best, Charlie |

will let the experts discuss the longboard, GO, START, RIO, etc
my concern is the shoulder i broke my shoulder doing windsurfing on ice this happened in march about 2 years ago and i only missed about 3 windsurf sessions that spring. so, for you - do NOT attempt to windsurf on ice OR snow on the other hand, when progressing one does tend to catapault frequently and hard at times however, i have rarely , if ever landed on my shoulder for uphauling - you can stay with smaller or lighter sails , use an EZuphaul or learn to beach and waterstart as you have said - there will always be risks, but i do not see it as a serious hindrance !!! in terms of your equipment - others will ask what have you done in terms of windsurfing up to now ie ever ?? harness, gybes, planing, etc lotsa luck buddy !! http://joewindsurfer.com

Thanks Joe, Appreciate the advice! I was never planning on learning on ice or snow though so that shouldnt be too much of a problem!
Just want to get started now! Charlie |

Charlie,
Any idea what the wind speed and sea conditions will be where you intend to take up sailing again? You will probably pick it up quickly, and since you are willing to "stretch" a bit right at first, it would be good to understand what sort of conditions you will be sailing in. Sea water or freshwater lake/river? Need this kind of info to give you a good recommendation. Roger |
