Default Futura 121 or Carve 131

Hi there
I have an old 2004 Carve 2004 that need to be replaced. I use it mostly with a 6.5 Tushingham 6.5 and have gone 30 knots with that sail. But also with a Hellcat 7.8 for lighter winds.

Have been looking for the Futura 121 since it came out, but am now uncertain if not the Carve would be better for me (85 kg/190cm)?

Looking at the rec sail sized and adding/subtracting 1 sq meter on both sides, I find that the carve 131 and the futura 121 would both fit my current sails, i.e. 6.5 - 8.0.

But perhaps the Futura will be too demanding, since I am more of a recreational sailer than pure free racer.

PS. I have a JP X-site 105 for hard wind sailing.

What would you advice? I guess my concern is that the Carve will be too "dull", since I have been sailing for nearly 30 years, but at the same time my comfort zone is prob not above 30 kn as I have already broken some ribs and also passed 60 y recently.

Best regards

Hi nbtgm1,
I have not sailed the 2012 Carve 131, but I can give you a fairly good comparison between the 2011 Futura 121 and the 2011 Carve 111.
Both are pretty fast, with the sail range you specify.
The Carve is very slightly easier to jibe and a bit more "turny", but the Futura is slightly faster on the top end, but still quite easy to jibe.
I do not think you can go wrong with either of these boards to replace your 2004 Carve.
Both of the newer boards will be a little faster, and both with be as easy (if not easier) to jibe.
The Carve 131 is going to seem a little larger than your 2004 Carve (what size is your 2004 Carve as it's important to compare one size to a similar size.)?
The Futura will be pretty much as easy to sail as your 2004 Carve. The Futura line borrows some design
items from the iSonic slalom race boards, but blends those design items into something that's nearly as fast, but much more user friendly.
Hope this helps,
Roger

Thanks,
my old Carve is 259/72.

I see that the new Carve 131 is 252/75,5, while the Futura 122 is 246/72

I guess my concern is whether the Futura 122 will have enough flotation support to carry me safely home when the wind dies and I have the 7.8 Hellcat sail (my biggest)?

But then I somehow feel that going with the Carve 131 is too safe, and I may be disappointed?

Any comments?

Hi TGM,
The Futura 122 will have more volume where you need it than your older Carve,
so not a problem on either salt or fresh water with the volume.
The Carve 131 could feel a bit big, but the extra width will give you slightly
earlier planing, so something to consider.
T do not think you would be "disappointed" with either of these boards and your
existing sail sizes.
Hope this helps,
Roger

Smile Thanks

Most useful, especially that the Futura will give good float. Thanks
