Default First Impressions of 2013 US147 (Ultrasonic)

Just thought I would give you all my first impressions of the board from my first outing.

Having owned the first incarnation of this board that is what I am going to compare it to.

First off I don't think it planes quite as early but there really isn't a lot in it, this may have something to do with the new tail cut outs?

It definitely feels more alive and trims from rail to rail giving a more exciting ride, I was using the same sail as on previous board and both had the mast foot dead centre.

Definitely feels more comfortable to ride and this may have been down to the new wingers.

Lastly I would like to add that I think the board is faster, well it feels faster, don't know if that is to do with the more lively ride. Will get some speeds when I get my GPS working.

Would be interesting to know what it feels like with Starboards new line of 'Ready to Race' fins but as usual there has been a total balls up even though I gave my dealer the part numbers but that's another story........

I also had my first sail on a 2013 Ultrasonic having had the 2012 before. Initial sail was in very marginal wind, I also felt the board was slower to plane than the 2012. It felt quite sticky, around the forward footstraps before it would fully release and accelerate.
Once planning the board sailed nose high, with a good trim over the rough sea I sailed in. This I felt was better than the 2012. Gybing was easier.
Need more time to compare, but initial impression is that most aspects improved at the expense of early planning.

funny, i thought one of the most appealing factors of the US 147 WAS early planing ??

Hi Unregistered,

To have a clear view it's very important to test the board directly against the previous one with same size sail, rider weight and level, then swap the board the board only and test again, then you have clear feedback. Hope this help

All the best

Unfortunately I am not in the lucky position of owning both boards to test back to back but I am the same weight and I was using the same sail and fin and had the mast base and foot straps in the same position, these were just my thoughts that's all. Strange that the other guy agrees? Overall I think I was quite complimentary.

I'm still on the 2011 version and not likely to switch over quickly because I like it too much.

Have you guys ever owned the 2011 and are you able to compare also against this one ?

Second sail today. Again very choppy and very marginal at first. I still find the board is slower on to the plane than the 2011/2012. I am talking about wind where you are slogging most of the time and a few gusts come along and active pumping is required to have any chance of planning. There are boards from other manufacturers that plane earlier. Bigger sustained gusts, it planes easily. Once planning the board is fast, rear strap position is greatly improved, great in choppy conditions. In my opinion the upwind and gybing is better than the previous version.
I guess you can't get everything in one package, but as light wind boards go, overall pretty good and slalom board speed.
Sail was a 2013 Racing 9.6, 57 and 58cm fins, 96kg sailor, back strap in the middle, front strap all the way back

Hi Unregistered,

I understand that you're comparing between the 2013 version and the previous version, but regardless of this I think that your 9.6 is rather small for your weight in marginal conditions.
I'm 87kg and I use a 10.9 with a 64cm fin in these marginal conditions. It still makes a difference of a few knots earlier planing c/w my 8.8 sail. I compare my 8.8 with your 9.6 regarding our weight difference.
My 8.8 starts planing from +/- 11-12 knots while the 10.9 starts from 8 knots, almost no pumping.

With my 10.9 in marginal conditions, I also put my mastfoot all the way back. For me it makes a considerable difference.

Anyhow, I also heard from some friends that the JP SLW starts planing a bit earlier at the expense of the "slalom feeling". It's like you said, you can't have it all in 1 package.

Belskorpio, as you know from previous posts I have owned both 2011 and 2012 boards so I have a good feel for those versions, just a more lively feel at the expense of maybe 1 knot of early planning threshold. And yes I have heard that too about the JP SLW but I wouldn't swap mine for one.

Unregistered, regardless of the size sail you are using, the fins you are using for that sail and your weight is too small.
