Default Ultrasonic, 11.0 race sail but what fin ?

So as not to hijack the earlier thread, I will start another. Just received the US with a Drake 58. I am only using 11.0 TR6 . Specs show max sail size as 12.0 and max fin as 62. Obviously the 58 is too small but I was thinking of 65 instead ?
Thanks !

Hi, I have used the US with an 11m and a Drake 62cm fin but found it a little too powerful, you may only need a 60cm in certain makes.

How much do you weight ?

I've found out that the stock 58 cm fin was plenty large enough with a Reflex II 11.0 m2 sail for my 65 kg weight. However, the stock 58 cm fin was too small with such a sail for a 105 kg pal : lots of spinouts. He very much liked a 62 cm fin with an 11 m2 sail and keeps the stock 58 cm fin for 9-9.5 sails.

I'm not sure you'll get a significant gain by going up to 65 cm on such a board. Remember it's a big slalom design with a thinned out and pinned tail block, not a formula design with a thick and wide tail block that's meant to be ultra-efficient upwind and downwind.

Cheers !

Thanks mcross19 and Jean-Marc!
I'm 84 kg and have retired the Formula board in favour of the US.
I am still coming to terms with the loss of upwind ability !
I think a 62 is the answer.
Thanks again.

mcross19,
I've also got the 7.0, 7.8 and 8.6 sails. Are you using all of those on the IS 110 ?

OK, for 84 kg, I would choose a fin larger than 58 cm with your 11 m2 sail in ultra-light wind conditions. It's no fun if you pump the sail and the fin spins out each time. A 62 cm lenght has been shown to be spot on to start and sustain the planing in the lowest wind range.

As for the loss of pointing upwind ability, the most efficient method is to foil the board upwind on her fin while slightly banking the hull on her leeward rail. You'll need planing speed to do that, closing the gap of the sail nicely on the deck of your board. However, this is not like a formula board + 70 cm fin combo : the lower the board speed, the lower the upwind angle you can do on the US/iSonic. That's perfectly normal because of her tail block and width design limitations. Nothing can beat a formula upwind in light winds, except perhaps a board with a daggerboard like a Phantom raceboard.

I would keep the stock 58 cm fin as it can become handy when overpowered on your 11 m2 sail : just swap the 62 cm fin for the 58 cm fin, add a bit more downhaul and out you can start again in stronger wind. Let us know later how it will go for you !

Cheers !

Hi, yes I am or that is the plan anyway, I have only used the 7 & 7.8 on the is110 so far, the reason that I chose the 110 is to overlap with the US147 with the 8.6. Think the 7.8 is the sweet spot for this board although the 7m works ok but is pushing the lower limits for this board.

Hi Unregistered,

FYI, I'm also 84kg (lost a few kgs in summer) and I use an old Deboichet R12/64 with my 11m2 on the US.

The Deb R12 is known to have a lot of flex in the top.
It planes extremely early.

From 8 knots I'm on the plane without too much pumping.
I find that for early planing you don't need to be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It's more important to step backwards exactly at the right moment when you go over the bow wave during a pump movement.
After that, a soft long fin helps me a lot to maintain planing.
But bear in mind that sharp Formula angles are impossible with the US.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the replies.
My local SB dealer will be on the beach today so I will finalise an order.
I really must get some new glasses as I was going to ask about fins for 107 and 130 IS but yesterday found them stamped on the blunt end of the board!
Then in my haste to rig the 8.6 on the new boom (I bought 2) I found the thing maxed at 226 when the sail said 227......
But there are more holes ? Should work ? Bang, bang, swear, curse, threaten to never buy Severne again etc.
Oh my, I'm trying to fit it on the shorter boom...peace has now been restored to my beach !
