Default Ultrasonic fin choice

Hi guys/team, can anyone let me know what fins they are using on either the 2013/2014 Ultrasonics?

Have been waiting for some Prepreg Starboard/Drake Ready to race fins for over a year and it looks like they are never going to appear so am looking at high quality aftermarket 100% prepreg carbon fins, what works? Please don't suggest Select fins as I don't want to use them as they seem a budget aftermarket fin to me.

I think I am right in saying the current shape is based on the R13, looking at what is available is a bit of a minefield, I could either get some Formula fins and get them re-headed to size or try one of the more swept back (rounded leading edge) slalom type fins for the larger slalom boards.

So what do you think is best? What works and what doesn't Have you tried experimenting with different makes/models/rakes? Remi, Jean, anyone?

I see Z-Fins do a formula fin that looks to be a blend of the two (straight leading edge with a rounded lower part).

If I were to go down the carbon fin route do you think I would need smaller as these tend to be more powerful.

Regards, Martin

Hi Al, it was actually a 56cm that I was after to accompany the 8.6, my local board shop are very good friends with the guys at Tushingham HQ and they cannot get this size of fin so am wanting to go down a different route and wanted feedback from people that have used/tried other performance fins and want to know what works and what doesn't.

Perhaps I should have explained myself a bit better, I have a 56cm R13 in standard guise which does the job but I would get better performance from an all carbon fin.

So Al how does the carbon 58 perform against the standard 58?

TBH, they are like chalk and cheese...... From a price point I feel that the R2R fins offer excellent performance for ya buck..... Ive used R2R 58cm with both 8.6 & 9.5 and felt is was spot on....

Ok thanks again Allan, I may try to get the 58cm R2R and see how it goes but for the long term I may contact the guys at F4 fins and get them to make something for me.

Hi Martin,

Yes recommend you the Drake Race 58 R2R to up grade the stock one and the good news is for 2015 all UltraSonic who have quiet big changes will be deliver directly with the Drake Race 58 R2R.

Anyway hope you will find this fin in your country.

All the best

My dealer has managed to get 58cm R2R for me. Will let you all know my findings. Strange how they list the 56cm version but it cannot be bought here in the UK?

Remi, I don't suppose what sort of changes we can expect from the 2015 Ultrasonic? I'm not asking for intricate details because I know you will not say but will the width be more/less? Will there be a length change and are you revising the cut outs? Will it be faster? Turn easier/quicker???

Hi mcross19

I can't go in details about the shape and so one, but we improve again the light wind performances of this machine and also increase the control, so wide wind range at the end.

All the best
