Hi,
I'm a brazilian windsurfer but will move to Helsinki on jan/08 and will live there for a couple of years. I would like to know as much as possible about windsurfing conditions over there. When can one start to sail (may?, June?)? , which equipment is recommended: Formula, Slalom etc.? Wind conditions? Spots? I appreciate if someone can help me because I do not want to stop sailing. Thanks Birmoser |

Hello Birmoser!
Mytrims is a very good place to find info of the spots in Finland. Equipment: winds in Finland are mostly light. So, if you want the get the most out of your summer, get formula equipment. But sometimes it can get windy, so you might also need smaller equipment. We sometimes get waves also, in Hanko and Pori. You will need a winter wetsuit here! Then you can start to windsurf when the ice melts (April-May probably). If you want, i can email you more info, I live in Helsinki too. My email is timi.hell (a) hotmail.com Timi Fin-51 ![]()

Hi Birmoser,
Welcome to Helsinki! I think you will be able to enjoy yourself... To get an understanding of how much wind we have here you can browse this archive http://ws.bonware.com/eps/e/archive/. The top of the gusts are about equal to the wind on open water. With a Formula you can get quite a number of days during the season, but also with smaller equipment like a Freestyle and a 6.0 sail (if 75 kg) you can typically sail 2-3 says a week. 50-60 days per season is not impossible if you have flexible working hours. There is flat water and chop in Helsinki, but by driving some 1.5-3.5 hours you can sometimes score some pretty decent wave sailing. You will need a 5/3 steamer with a rashguard underneath (and boots, hood, gloves) early in the season (april, may) and late in the season (September, October, November). In between it is warmer and a shortarm steamer is quite appropriate. regards PG |
